Looks like the “Boston date” for this really excellent lineup is either Providence, Rhode Island (about an hour’s drive) or Hartford, Connecticut (about 2, but an easy drive via Mass Pike and I-84). Being how jam-packed this autumn is with bands coming through the area, I’m guessing it was a scheduling difficulty rather than an oversight that led to this sad state of affairs. If you can somehow make it, or find yourself in a place they’re performing (see entire schedule), it should be a fantastic show.

Silversun Pickups

A marvelous band from L.A.’s much-beloved Silver Lake scene (well, much-beloved by me, in any case), Silversun Pickups have been performing together since around 2005, when their debut EP, Pikul, was released. Their debut full-length album, Carnavas, came out in 2006, with two singles – “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles” – making it to Billboard’s Top 10 Modern Rock Tracks. Earlier this year was the follow-up, Swoon (Dangerbird Records), which has received a lot of airplay on the alternative stations. Influences include My Bloody Valentine, the Velvet Underground, Elliott Smith, Sonic Youth, Sweet, Modest Mouse, and Secret Machines.

Silversun Pickups are: Brian Aubert – guitar/lead vocals, Nikki Monninger – bass/vocals, Christopher Guanlao – drums, and Joseph Lester – keyboards/samples/sound manipulation.

Cage The Elephant

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys in Providence over the summer, and I can tell you, they put on a fantastic show. From Bowling Green, Kentucky, Matt Shultz (vocals), Brad Shultz (guitar), Jared Champion (drums, percussion), Daniel Tichenor (bass, vocals), and Lincoln Parish (lead guitar) deliver a Southern-tinged rootsy/funky punk sound, with Matt ricocheting around on and off the stage; he’s pretty amazing to watch. Literate lyrics; high-energy punk attitude. Nice bit of dobro on their big hit “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked”.

An Horse

I wasn’t familiar with these guys at all, but I very much like what I’m hearing. An Horse is the Brisbane, Australian duo of Kate Cooper and Damon Cox. Originally both managers at a Brisbane indie record store, they started performing together in July 2007, soon building a fan base and opening up for Tegan and Sara and Death Cab for Cutie. Their debut album is Rearrange Beds.
