I used to go to school in Boston about 23 years ago. A friend of mine who at the time was a shred- type of metal guitarist told me about this awesome band that played at the Silhouette Lounge in Allston. The band was 9 Below Zero. Bass, drums, harp, sax and Peter. It turns out that bar was literally down the block from my apartment.

The bar was seedy and great. No cover... but the beer was expensive. Peter Parcek was amazing... even back then.

He played a unique fusion of everything. At that time I had seen Stevie Ray Vaughn live about 3 times. Stevie was great... but Peter Parcek was unique. Blues... but nothing like Stevie. Peter could play fast and clean. And he could also make the guitar howl and groan.

He did it with his eyes closed too. I used to go every week to watch this guy play. I'd bring my friends who also played guitar and we'd stand around with our mouths open in wonder.

He is a real nice guy too.

He put out an CD about 9 years ago called Evolution. As I understand it, the title referred to the fact that he was more into songwriting and less in to guitar shredding. It is a good recording but it doesn't capture what I witnessed many, many, many Thursday nights in Allston and Boston.

I saw him play about a month ago at Strange Brew in NH. Still amazing.
