Here’s a few very cool local band events this week. There’s a three-day benefit for Haiti at The Middle East Downstairs; a three-day Jonathan Richman encampment at the Middle East Upstairs (which are all sold out, but you never know); and H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E. along with Walter Sickert and the Army Of Broken Toys, Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling, and Sarah RabDAU at the Church of Boston. On Saturday, Feb. 20, Asa Brebner and his Family Jewels grace the stage (such as it is) of the Plough & Stars in Cambridge for an afternoon show.

Asa Brebner CD Release Party @ Precinct, Union Square, Somerville… tonight!

Asa Brebner

Asa Brebner

Welcome to another edition of Boston Bands This Week Weekend. Ok, yes, I screwed up again. As I’m running out of time (because I’m actually trying to get to this show), for now I’ll just quickly mention Asa Brebner’s CD Release Party, which is, um, tonight. And tomorrow I’ll profile a few shows happening next week. So, the irrepressible Asa Brebner has a super huge shindig planned for yes, tonight, to celebrate the release of his new album Suenos De Los Muertos.

There’s been lots of exciting stuff going on for my favorite Eastside L.A. bands, which I first profiled in my “Silverlake Roundup” – Part One and Part Two. I’ll be including those I have some info. for; if I’m leaving anything out (or got anything wrong), please let me know. Stay tuned for a batch of new bands from – or who regularly play at clubs – in this area (which, to be technically accurate, comprises Silverlake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, etc.). But for now, read on…

toss of a coin

i was lying in bed, trying to surround myself
with pleasant thoughts,
enough to ease myself into
the menacing new day.
when i heard a knock on the door
i was alarmed –
who would disturb me like this?

you never wrote

even when we were together
you never wrote for me.
your poetry was about any number
of mundane things
but not of love; or if so, love abstract
not of me.
i didn’t inspire – i was only “good enough”
that’ll do, i suppose.

Show Preview: The Residents ~ Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge ~ Wed., February 10, 2010

An Evening with The Residents – The Talking Light Tour
at the Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, Wednesday, February 10
(18+ show)

The Residents, circa 1986

The Residents, circa 1986

“Four interior decorators of the Apocalypse”

I’ll begin with this disclaimer: this is going to be a woefully inadequate introduction to a long-standing and highly regarded multimedia performance art troupe (and yes, I suppose you could also call them a band), The Residents. I feel I must say something to commemorate their upcoming performance at the Middle East Downstairs this Wednesday, though with the bands long and lavish history (and my time limitation due to a ton of other stuff breathing down my neck), I won’t be able to do more than give a brief nod – so my apologies in advance to their loyal fans.

A wonderful evening at the cozy Middle East Upstairs with L.A. bands The Willowz and Delta Spirit. It was really great to be able to see Delta Spirit after getting a small taste of their music via a guest appearance from Matt Vasquez at a recent benefit show in Los Angeles that was (very happily) webcast in the middle of the night…
