I see that two weeks ago, I threatened a bunch of band profiles and updates. What can I say? Sh*t happens. And sometimes, really weird sh*t happens. More on that coming soon, once I’ve had sufficient time to collect and jot down my thoughts. For now, here’s an update on some of my favorite Eastside L.A. bands who’ve floated into my inbox in the past few months – Mezzanine Owls has a welcomed rebirth on JAXART Records; Summer Darling has a new song and a new video; Walking Sleep has a special 12″ vinyl/CD package of their recent Tarp Sessions plus rarities; and Voxhaul Broadcast is in town Tuesday night at TT’s!

Mezzanine Owls

Very happy to report that Mezzanine Owls are back, with a few new songs on Jaxart Records (both of whom I’ve mentioned here a few years ago). On October 11, they released limited edition 7″ vinyl, “Obstacle” b/w “Tethered To The Fountain.” Just 250 copies, so order now! I’m not sure if this will be an actual resurrection (full length album, shows), but it’s certainly a promising start.

Summer Darling

Summer Darling has a few new things out, while they continue writing for their third full-length album. There’s a video for “My Reminder,” inspired by 80s slasher films (you can read more about it here). They’ve shared a new demo, “Outer Dark.” And on December 6, lead singer Ben Heywood releases a solo album called Skills for the Long Emergency, “a compilation of 8 short stories set in the western United States after a state’s war over dwindling natural resources has forced the dissolution of the Union.” Sad to say, that sort of thing doesn’t sound quite so far-fetched to me as it once would have. You can hear a song from it on his facebook page.

Walking Sleep

Formerly the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Walking Sleep has just released a collection of their excellent Tarp Sessions. You can purchase the digital files or select from several special packages – 12″ orange swirl vinyl with bonus CD “Excerpts & Debris” (out takes, rarities, live tracks, original demos), poster, t-shirt, tote bag… all in limited editions. Cool beans. There’s a show tonight at the Tin Can Ale House (if you’re in San Diego), and they’re playing at Origami Vinyl in L.A. on November 19 and at the Satellite (formerly Spaceland) on November 25.

Voxhaul Broadcast

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Voxhaul Broadcast a bunch of times – with The Movies at Spaceland back in 2008 (ohhhh yes), with Local Natives the The Union Line at TT’s (in the dead of winter, January 2009, with maybe 2 or 3 others), and on tour with Airborne earlier this year. A great band (Voxhaul Broadcast, that is; Airborne’s not too shabby either).

They’re coming through the area and will be at T.T. the Bear’s Place on Tuesday night (November 8), along with Ocean Grove and Robert Schwartzman of Rooney. They released their Beyond Love and War EP less than two weeks ago (listen below). Their debut album, Timing Is Everything, came out back in March.
