One of my personal favorites – the dark, luscious and mysterious Jaggery – is in the midst of some special performances at the cozy Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, for their first ever residency. Supporting them are some of Boston’s most fascinating musicians with new bands and projects.

For those of us not currently in warm, supportive relationships, there are a few events starting tonight to help cure whatever aspect of love’s bitter truth ails you. First up – unvalentine’s day org – “song and stories of love lost, heart-break, break-ups, and the wreck love can leave you in.” An evening of festivities at Lizard Lounge, hosted by Jaggery’s Mali Sastri (they’ll be performing), and also featuring Lach, Trabants, Brian Carpenter & the Confessions, words by Edrie (of Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys), and stories by massmouth. Directed by Noah Blumenson-Cook, this eerie and haunting video is for the breathtaking “Sea of Sideways”, Jaggery‘s first single from their third release, Upon A Penumbra.
Absolutely love these guys. They’re planning a multimedia EP release for the spring in Boston, combining music, video, and theater. For now, they’re taking a little break from live shows, but will be at it again in 2011. If you haven’t yet seen them in person, make it your first New Year’s resolution!

Rachel Jayson and Mali Sastri of Jaggery
Sometimes it takes an unexpected glitch to realize how brilliant a band really is. No, not glitch; to lose power two songs into your set at the long-awaited CD release party for your new album is nothing short of a clusterf*ck. This was after having duplication problems with their new release, Upon A Penumbra, with the (somewhat) fixed CDs arriving just the day before. It was, as Jaggery‘s Mali Sastri pointed out the second time we were plunged into total darkness, “fitting.” But being the amazingly talented musicians they are, not only did they persevere; they wrapped their hands tightly around the neck of this debacle and shook it. Hard. What resulted was a powerful and poignant joining of spirits, and the most awe-inspiring set I’ve seen them perform.

There’s a special evening going on at Church tomorrow night – Jaggery’s CD Release Party for their new album Upon A Penumbra. Their music is haunting and mesmerizing, and they’ll be joined two other fascinating bands with influences ranging from Southern gospel to Middle Eastern, Native American, African and Eastern European musical traditions, making for something quite different from your usual indie rock fare. Definitely worth catching.

Mali Sastri of Jaggery; Walter Sickert and (a soldier of) the Army of Broken Toys
It was a wondrous and hilarious clashing of cultures in the House of Blues restaurant on Lansdowne Street after Evelyn Evelyn’s tour finale in the big room. Jaggery brought a huge helping of class to this section of town best known for baseball, burgers and beer. And Walter Sickert and The Army of Broken Toys, with a wicked gleam in their eyes, tried to see just how far they could go before having the plug pulled. Pretty damn far, I’m happy to report. Jaggery harpist extraordinaire Petaluma Vale commented after their classical and gothic-inspired ethereal set, “I think I’m overdressed for this place,” as she glanced down at her elegant long skirt, appearing for all the world like a fairy princess lost in Walmart. I argued that the Lansdowne Street eatery was lucky to have such a classy event grace their establishment.

Three nice shows to help everyone officially kick off their summer. First up, there’s the Narragansett Summer Concert Series TONIGHT at the Hard Rock Cafe, with an evening of rootsy Americana featuring Jimmy Ryan and Hayride, Sam Reid & the Riot Act and others. Then tomorrow, an actual “Summer Kick-off Party” at T.T. the Bear’s Place, featuring Plushgun, The Appreciation Post, Vivian Darkbloom, and Mr. Fyner & the Tech Ed Room. And straight off their East Coast tour and epic evening at the House of Blues Evelyn Evelyn afterparty (review forthcoming), Jaggery will be performing on Sunday with Mary Bichner/Box Five and Ginger Ibex at the venerable folk establishment, Club Passim.

I present to you two evenings of stark contrast: a theatrical spectacular of epic proportions – the closing night of Evelyn Evelyn‘s whirlwind worldwide tour, with special guests Amanda Palmer, Jason Webley, and Sxip Shirey), followed by an ultra-special afterparty featuring Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys and Jaggery at the House of Blues Saturday night; and For the Sake of the Song, a stripped-down, unplugged acoustic showcase founded by Boston musician Patrick Coman, also featuring local singer-songwriters Dan Emino and Levi Schmidt, and indie folk duo Flightless Buttress, which touches down on Sunday at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston.
