Something a bit different for me. To be honest, I’m not a huge funk or hip-hop fan (and these guys are rather surprisingly both), but I’ll make an exception for a band this good. Somerville based trio Billy Wine refer to themselves as “funk hip hop/instrumental” – sometimes they just jam out on their own, and other times they’re joined by a rapper. Check out one of their instrumentals. And if you like what you hear, keep an eye out on their sites for upcoming shows.

Madam Edrie, Band Matriarch ~ OFF WITH HER HEAD!!!

Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys treated a wildly diverse crowd at Somerville’s ArtBeat Festival last Friday to a humorous and sly “PG version” of their bawdy cabaret. As little kids danced in front and blew bubbles, they performed Tipper Gore-approved classics such as “Hole In The Boat,” Johnny Cash’s “Sam Hall,” “Sea Song (Mare Carmen),” “Planet Killer,” and their pop hit from the ’80s, “Ghostbusters.”

A Weekend In Somerville: Jonathan Richman Tribute/Arts Council Benefit & Somerville Open Studios
