Here’s an absolutely ridiculous line-up of bands at the cozy little Lizard Lounge tomorrow night (or rather *tonight*, but the time I get this posted..). And speaking of my tardiness, apologies for this ‘quick and dirty’ preview, but this is seriously worthy of a mention, despite its hastiness. This may well sell out, so get there early. See you there.

Boston Bands this week…

The Kristen Ford Band, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, Lori McKenna, and Cassavettes.

The Kristen Ford Band, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, Lori McKenna, and Cassavettes.

No fancy embellishment; just a quick rundown of some Boston-area bands of note this week, before the week’s over. Thursday is a busy night. The Kristen Ford Band is at Precinct (Union Square, Somerville) with Goli, Box Five, and School for Robots. Thursday also brings newly transplanted from Maine but now Boston local, the absolutely brilliant Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, to the Lizard Lounge, along with Angeline and Naked On Rollerskates. It also begins a three-night residency at Club Passim for folk songstress Lori McKenna. And on Saturday, Boston Americana-folk-rock favorite Cassavettes sadly performs their final show at the cozy Middle East Upstairs, joined by the Luxury and the Autumn Hollow Band.

Club D’Elf with special guests Randy Roos and Reeves Gabrels @ the Lizard Lounge ~ May 28, 2010

Club D'Elf - Reeves Gabrels, Tom Hall, and Yaure Muniz.

How exactly is it that it took me 14 years to see these guys live? That was the question looming in my head at the cozy Lizard Lounge, as Club D’Elf‘s adventurous jazz/dub/fusion excursions ran rampant and unchecked through my electrified, buzzing brain. This was a special occasion – part of a Memorial Weekend ‘guitar orgy’ which, on this particular night, was presided over by special guests Randy Roos and Reeves Gabrels. Reeves I have seen before, and it was good to see him again. Mr. Roos I wasn’t familiar with, but he’s a wildly impressive guitarist as well, and there was some good-natured ‘sparring’ (and at times delightful interplay between the two) which added even more enjoyment to a heaping helping of aural ecstacy.

Boston Bands This Weekend…

BBTW18-400

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everyone – and let’s see how quickly I can do this and get it up. Starting tonight, there’s a four-day extravaganza over at Passim called The Campfire Festival. It’s quite a good bargain for the price, with loads of fantastic local artists and bands (just found the schedule, so click on in for details). Also tonight, I’ll be heading over to Lizard Lounge to check out Club d’Elf along with special guests Randy Roos, and – from the wilds of Nashville – Mr. Reeves Gabrels, who will surely be engaging in some mighty fine guitar wankery sorcery.

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Welcome to the one-minute edition of Boston Bands this week. Coming up, well, right now, at the Lizard Lounge is “Boston-based siren rock/torture chamber pop ensemble” Jaggery. Tomorrow (Thursday) begins the ThirdThursdays @ The Rosebud concert series, with Jeddo Stars (with former members of The Charms) and Seven Shades of Grey. And Saturday night at the Middle East Upstairs is HUMANWINE, Mighty Tiny, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, and Dave Magario. It’s being billed as “an amazingly eclectic night of off-kilter rock ā€˜nā€™ roll.” Oh yes indeed.

John Shade and Zac Taylor

John Shade and Zac Taylor

Two Boston-area musicians featured this week. There’s John Shade, a singer-songwriter performing with a string quartet (nice!) at the Lizard Lounge Tuesday night (that’s tomorrow), as part of a three-week residency. Then there’s Zac Taylor, guitarist/songwriter (guitarist for Vivian Darkbloom, whom I had the pleasure of seeing last month). He has a CD release party for his solo debut, Salesman, at cafe 939, where he’ll be joined by his backing band and horn section, “The Drugs” (plus a few guests).
