The Airborne Toxic Event, The Henry Clay People & Red Cortez @ the Trocadero 10/10/09

by Becky Simmers, guest blogger

The opening bands, Red Cortez and The Henry Clay People, were charismatic and amusing, as well as absurdly talented – soon to be headlining many of their own shows individually, I’m sure. The antics, the mishaps, the silly yet driving force behind both opening sets…what a way to start off a night. Those two bands alone would have made for a great concert-going experience, giving me two new bands I can’t get enough of. I should have expected excellent taste in music from The Airborne Toxic Event…

It’s Good To Be Back Home: The Airborne Toxic Event in Boston

The Airborne Toxic Event, The Henry Clay People, and Red Cortez at the House of Blues, Boston, MA, October 13, 2009

On a chilly autumn night in the rather impersonal caverns of the new Landsdown Street House of Blues, this show had the feeling of a family barbecue on a lazy, warm summer afternoon. Anna’s hometown and the rest of the band’s adopted one, it’s clearly a special place for them, and while it’s not like being back home in L.A. with family and friends, I like to think it a reasonable facsimile. A comforting respite from the long and weary road.

Rocketship to Mars: The Airborne Toxic Event @ The Trocadero

The Airborne Toxic Event, The Henry Clay People, and Red Cortez at The Trocadero, Philadelphia, PA, October 10, 2009

In an interview at the Reading/Leeds Festival, Mikel joked about performing on Mars (as in, one of the few places they haven’t been yet). With how I felt by the end of this epic evening, though it wasn’t Mars, it may have been a nearby galaxy.

The Airborne Toxic Event

What can I say about The Airborne Toxic Event that I haven’t already said… about a thousand times before? So I’ll just say to the uninitiated that they put on one of the most awe-inspiring performances I’ve ever seen in my many years of concert-going, and a whole lot of people agree with me. This time out, they’ve changed their set around to include not only songs which will likely appear on their second album (“Echo Park”, “A Letter to Georgia”, and “All I Ever Wanted”), but also new covers of the Drifters, Yo La Tengo, and The Magnetic Fields – plus a lovely acoustic set in the middle. A new stage design – on, I’m guessing, stages large enough to accommodate it (which will be most of them, since they’re playing larger venues now), and a new Moog as well!

This is an addendum to my recent Silverlake Band Update. Yes, I do realize that most of these upcoming events are in California and this is a Boston blog. I figured I would get everyone really, really familiar with all these names so you’ll know who I’m talking about when they do come here. Meanwhile, perhaps it’ll serve as some kind of invocation.

Band Profile: Red Cortez

redcortez_color1

Originally known as The Weather Underground, the group formed mid-2004 with singer/guitarist Harley Prechtel-Cortez, bassist Ryan Kirkpatrick, drummer Diego Guerrero and guitarist Sho Bagley. Sho left around the middle of last year, and was replaced by Edmonton native Calvin J. Love. Adding a Canadian to the mix made the band even more diverse, as they already have Guatemalan, Mexican, and Irish ancestry, which comes out at times in beautiful ways, in their sound and subject matter. The new band member, new songs, and inevitable linking to the ’60’s/’70’s leftist group (often as important to journalists as their songs) inspired them to change their name to Red Cortez. Their first show was Nov. 11, for the debut of Indie 103.1’s “Check One Tuesdays” night at the Echoplex, opening for Earlimart and Afternoons (good heavens, what a lineup).
