The Bad Art Ensemble, Lone Pine Cones, and Rodfest 8<\/p><\/div>\n

Once again it’s midweek, and I’m just now doing this. How dumb, how like me. Just three bands\/events are profiled, so I can get this posted before the first one actually happens. Which would be the Bad Art Ensemble, a proud Boston institution, who are at the teeny tiny Plough & Stars in Cambridge tonight. Another CNC Indie Music Marathon<\/a> begins at 6pm on Friday at the All Asia Cafe (also in Cambridge), this time featuring – along with five others – the psychedelic dreamy space music of Lone Pine Cones<\/a>, whom I’ve been enjoying as I write this. On Saturday, the Paradise hosts Rodfest 8<\/a>, an annual benefit concert that honors the memory of a Stonehill College student, profits going to a memorial scholarship fund. <\/p>\n

Wednesday, January 27<\/h4>\n

The Bad Art Ensemble<\/a> @ the Plough & Stars – Wednesday Jan 27 (tonight).<\/p>\n

These guys have been around forever<\/em>, they’re a Boston institution, and loads of fun. Through the years, the band has been home to a “who’s who” of Boston luminaries. As they say themselves “most people are in the band, some come to play”. The current lineup includes “ethan meyer or larry dersch on the drums…. keith jones on bass… mike powers plays guitar ….. scott getchell trumpets….russell jewell trombone……kit buckley saxaphone …. max azanow vocalist…… ”regular” special guests include mark chenevert on reeds and the lovely Bad Art Dancers…….” (from their MySpace page<\/a>). If even half of those folks turn up, it’ll be a sight to see on the Plough’s “stage” (which is, in fact, an oriental rug laid out at the back of the very small room).<\/p>\n

The Lone Pine Cones<\/p><\/div>\n

The very lovely psychedelic and dreamy Lone Pine Cones<\/a> (Benjamin Hughes, Matthew Rhodes, Jonathan Lesh, and Michael Kofron) are part of the six-band-lineup for Friday’s CNC<\/a> Indie Music Marathon at All Asia. I don’t know much about them except that they hail from Boston and have a nice sound. Beyond that, check out their MySpace and have a listen. Others performing that night include Pavane<\/a> (singer-songwriter, pianist, and accordionist Pavane and Steve Ohm on guitar), the acoustic jazzy folk of Alicia Lemke Band<\/a> (who’s actually from Wisconsin, but never mind that), indie folk-pop Brooklyn-based My Light Sweet Fire<\/a>, and two country\/pop singers – Jacqueline Smith Band<\/a> and Christie Leigh<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saturday, January 30<\/h4>\n

Rodfest 8<\/a> featuring: Three Day Threshold<\/a> (CD release), Cassavettes<\/a>, Quixote<\/a>, Death and the Dance Machine<\/a>, and Reid and the Riot Act<\/a> @ the Paradise Rock Club – Saturday Jan 30.<\/p>\n

This “festival” is held every year to honor Gregory “Rodney” Moynahan, a 23-year-old Stonehill College graduate who loved music so much he would hold a birthday festival for himself. Sadly, in 2004 he died in a car accident, so his cousin (band leader and banjo\/mandolin\/harmonica & guitarist Kier Byrnes of the rootsy Americana band Three Day Threshold<\/a>) and friends have continued the tradition ever since, with profits going toward the “Greg Moynahan Memorial Scholarship Fund” for Stonehill College students. This year Three Day Threshold are also celebrating the release of their new CD Straight Out Of The Barrel<\/em>, and are joined by popular Boston folk\/Americana band Cassavettes<\/a> and others.
