Three bands featured this week who are performing on two consecutive nights at the cozy Cafe 939<\/a>. This is a really nice<\/em> coffee house and performance space down the street from the Berklee School Of Music (and run by its students). First up is Hanna and the Bloodlines<\/a> on Thursday night, featuring jazzy pop vocals from Hannah Sumner. The following night is going to be quite an extravaganza – it’s Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys<\/a>‘ CD release party for SteamShipKillers<\/em>, and they’ll be joined by their good friends, Jaggery<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Hannah and The Bloodlines<\/a> are an interesting band. Sometimes they have a jazzy pop thing going on (such as on “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” or “Raven”), with smooth and soulful vocals from Hannah Sumner. On “Medusa,” they’re a bit more indie rock, with sax woven in. The “Zim Ba Du Wei Um” live jam is more dreamy and meandering. It’s a sophisticated sound that also features Stephen Gaspar, guitar; Ryan Broderick, drums; Shaun Munday\/Cory Sterling, bass; and Jeremy Vovcsko, saxophone. They’ll be joined by MEM, though I was unable to find any info. about them.<\/p>\n

The indescribable Walter Sickers & The Army Of Broken Toys<\/a> will be having a major jamboree at Cafe 939 to celebrate the release of their CD SteamShipKillers<\/em> (out June 1). Be prepared for a surrealist carnival sideshow with a breathtaking soundtrack featuring piano, guitar, accordion, xylophone, viola, violin, cello, ukelele, drums, stand-up bass, clarinet, sax – and various other revolving dancers and marionettes. If you haven’t seen these guys before, you really must. It’s a bizarre and wonderful experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/param><\/param><\/param><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n

They’re currently having a fundraiser to fix their car which was recently hit by someone here in Boston without insurance (great, huh?). Walter does this delightfully bizarre artwork called Inkdrips<\/em>, which can be seen here<\/a>, proceeds from which will go towards repairs. (from the site): “From October 2009 to October 2010, at least 365 new pieces of art will be created and shared via the Internet each piece available for public consumption and purchase! Work ranging from Fantastical Fine Art illustrations to baby seals clubbing poachers and everything in between. Inspired at young age by the likes of David Lynch, Salvador Dali & Terry Gilliam; WS invites you into the world of the WireForest as it manifests itself one day and one drip at a time.”<\/p>\n

After the Cafe 939 kickoff, Mr. Sickert & TAOBT will be embarking on an East Coast tour to introduce the new arrival. Dates are:<\/p>\n

I also just saw, to my eye-popping, jaw-dropping wonder, that they’ll be supporting Evelyn Evelyn<\/a> at their World Tour Grand Finale at the House of Blues<\/a> on June 19. I can’t even begin to get my head around that one just yet, so I’ll revisit this in about two weeks.<\/p>\n

Joining T.A.O.B.T. will be Jaggery<\/a>, featuring exquisite vocals from Mali Sastri, accompanied by piano, drums & percussion, contrabass, and harp. Dark, ethereal and elegant, they’ve garnered comparisons to the Cocteau Twins, Bjork and Diamandas Galas. Have a listen on their MySpace; quite hypnotic, pretty and at times intense. This is going to be quite a show.<\/p>\n
