I present to you two evenings of stark contrast: a theatrical spectacular of epic proportions – the closing night of Evelyn Evelyn<\/a>‘s whirlwind worldwide tour, with special guests Amanda Palmer<\/a>, Jason Webley<\/a>, and Sxip Shirey<\/a>), followed by an ultra-special afterparty featuring Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys<\/a> and Jaggery<\/a> at the House of Blues<\/a> Saturday night; and For the Sake of the Song<\/a><\/em>, a stripped-down, unplugged acoustic showcase founded by Boston musician Patrick Coman<\/a>, also featuring local singer-songwriters Dan Emino<\/a> and Levi Schmidt<\/a>, and indie folk duo Flightless Buttress<\/a>, which touches down on Sunday at O’Brien’s Pub<\/a> in Allston. <\/p>\n

The Evelyn Evelyn sisters, triumphant from their blockbuster worldwide tour, return to Boston for their closing night at the House of Blues on Lansdowne Street. A part of town which is always something of a carnival, Saturday night it will be even more so. I had the great pleasure of seeing these conjoined twins<\/a> at their kickoff show at Oberon<\/a>, where they were brilliant if perhaps somewhat reluctant performers. I can only imagine that after two months of solid gigging in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, the girls are now seasoned professionals. They’ll be supported by Amanda Palmer, Jason Webley, and circus composer Sxip Shirey, who will each be performing a short set of their solo material.<\/p>\n

As a special treat for this final show of the tour, there will be an exotic afterparty befitting Parapagus Tripus Dibrachius twins in the HOB restaurant, featuring the Victorian burlesque spectacular of Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys<\/a> and the elegant gothic sounds of Jaggery<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For the Sake of the Song<\/a> is a Boston area concert series that hosts monthly showcases of folk, roots and Americana featuring local musicians. Founded by Allston-based Patrick Coman<\/a> and named after a song by the late, great Townes Van Zandt<\/a>, its mission is to bring together Boston’s best performers in these genres and present them in venues suitable for intimate performances of this type. After living in Berlin, Germany, where there are many underground, ‘DIY’ sorts of places for acoustic music, he became frustrated with the dearth of such venues here in Boston, and ended up first hosting shows in his living room.<\/p>\n

Fortunately things have moved on from there, and this month’s show will be at O’Brien’s Pub<\/a> in Allston. While O’Brien’s is more accustomed to hard rock bands, they share a similar goal with Coman – to provide a spotlight for Allston’s growing original music scene. And O’Brien’s is actually a very nice room with surprisingly good sound. Featured musicians this evening will be local singer\/songwriters Dan Emino<\/a> and Levi Schmidt<\/a> (acoustic soul); Coman’s ‘Americana-tinged city folk’ group, performing songs from his debut album Southern Storms<\/a><\/em>, and indie folk duo Flightless Buttress<\/a> (guitar and cello).<\/p>\n
