For those of us not currently in warm, supportive relationships, there are a few events starting tonight to help cure whatever aspect of love’s bitter truth ails you. First up – unvalentine’s day org – “song and stories of love lost, heart-break, break-ups, and the wreck love can leave you in.” An evening of festivities at Lizard Lounge, hosted by Jaggery’s Mali Sastri (they’ll be performing), and also featuring Lach, Trabants, Brian Carpenter & the Confessions, words by Edrie (of Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys), and stories by massmouth. Read more about it on Ryan’s Smashing Life.

A few bands performing for the Livestock Boston series: Streight Angular, Eli 'Paperboy' Reed, Lenkadu, and TonyBear
Yep, big doings tonight for the local Boston music scene. Predictably, I’ll be working. But you should definitely get out tonight. Don’t get bummed if you don’t have tickets for the sold out Deer Tick guys; there’s other noteworthy stuff going on – a brand new club’s opening night (with live music – and FREE admission!), and a bunch of local bands playing for a worthwhile charity.

A few sights of Boston's First Night: Johnny Blazes @ the Hynes, Judgement Day, the Bunny Collective, a parade!, bright & noisy fireworks on Boston Common, Somerville Symphony Orkestra.
Wow, what a busy and chaotic 2011, just one week in! While I’m swamped with new shows to list, bands to possibly profile, and a host of other things, I thought I’d show you what I did on New Year’s Eve, though it now seems like a distant memory… Only in Boston do First Night celebrations include parents with their children watching a parade, a man at Downtown Crossing advertising Judgment Day (May 21, in case you were wondering), impressive ice sculptures (melting in the unusually pleasant evening), little kids petting policemen’s horses, and a full-on protest for Palestinian rights. Such were the scenes in and around Boston Common, capped off by a wondrous and satisfyingly loud early fireworks display, and then an evening of awesome music.

I’ve just put up the beginnings of a “band resources” page (see the sidebar or check it out here). This will in time include all sorts of info like media outlets, promoters, places to repair instruments, rehearsal studios, etc. For now, I’ve got many of the important venues listed, with booking info and capacity. This is obviously a big project, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Happy Xmas.

Mary Bichner and Eliza Kopczynska of Box Five (photo by Justin Moore)
It’s understandable that Mary Bichner of Box Five dreamt of one day being accompanied by a full orchestra. Her extraordinary, classically-informed vocals make her sound as though she’s been plucked from a Victorian salon. It’s amazing that Leave The Earth Behind is her debut full-length album, as its virtuosic performances, multi-textured complexity and overall cohesiveness would suggest otherwise.

The Kristen Ford Band is at Precinct (Union Square, Somerville) with Goli, Box Five, and School for Robots. Thursday also brings newly transplanted from Maine but now Boston local, the absolutely brilliant Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, to the Lizard Lounge, along with Angeline and Naked On Rollerskates. It also begins a three-night residency at Club Passim for folk songstress Lori McKenna. And on Saturday, Boston Americana-folk-rock favorite Cassavettes sadly performs their final show at the cozy Middle East Upstairs, joined by the Luxury and the Autumn Hollow Band.

Performing this week: Black Fortress Of Opium (photo by Derek Kouyoumjian), Tristan Allen, Girlfriends, and A.K.A.C.O.D.
There are five shows of special note this week, starting on Wednesday. Three of them feature winners from the Boston Music Awards on Sunday night (more on that soon). First… well, technically she’s not a Boston artist anymore, as she’s moved to Austin, but Monique Ortiz had been a strong presence on the Boston music scene until just recently, and will be performing with beloved locals Dana Colley and Larry Dersch as A.K.A.C.O.D., so if you’d like your music smoky and soulful, with deep, sensuous vocals and gorgeous sax, most certainly head to the Plough & Stars tonight. On Thursday, Ajda the Turkish Queen‘s lushly gothic Black Fortress of Opium are joined by the fascinating “dope folk” of Narcoterror (also featuring Ajda) and Happy The Clown at P.A.’s Lounge. And just announced is a special Friday night “2010 Boston Music Awards celebration party” at Great Scott: Best DJ/Dance Night (The Pill) & TimeOut Boston Editor’s Choice (Mystery Roar). Sunday, there’s a special performance at the Berklee Performance Center with BMA ‘Artist of the Year’ Amanda Palmer and Tristan Allen, the Berklee Summer Student pianist whom Ms. Palmer met and was so impressed with, she helped put out his debut EP. Also on Sunday, for those more in the mood for a good ol’ fashioned rock club, Great Scott is having their holiday party with You Can Be A Wesley and BMA winners of ‘Rock Artist of the Year’, Girlfriends.

Absolutely love these guys. They’re planning a multimedia EP release for the spring in Boston, combining music, video, and theater. For now, they’re taking a little break from live shows, but will be at it again in 2011. If you haven’t yet seen them in person, make it your first New Year’s resolution!
P.S. A very happy birthday to Jaggery chanteuse, Mali Sastri!

Performing will be the legendary Barry & The Remains, Lynn-based hip-hop artist M-Dot, 60’s girl group lovers Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, synth-poppers from Worcester DOM, the Americana/folk band Kingsley Flood, and more (see full list below). Tickets can be purchased from BrownPaperTickets.com for just the show, or VIP tickets which include a cocktail reception. Presented by Music Drives Us and TimeOut Boston. Proceeds will benefit the Music Drives Us foundation. And don’t forget to VOTE for your favorites. You can see the list of nominees and VOTE NOW at the BMA site. Voting closes at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 29th. Shameless plugs follow for a few of my faves…
