New Jaggery Video for “Sea of Sideways”

Directed by Noah Blumenson-Cook, this eerie and haunting video is for the breathtaking “Sea of Sideways”, Jaggery‘s first single from their third release, Upon A Penumbra.

Absolutely love these guys. They’re planning a multimedia EP release for the spring in Boston, combining music, video, and theater. For now, they’re taking a little break from live shows, but will be at it again in 2011. If you haven’t yet seen them in person, make it your first New Year’s resolution!

P.S. A very happy birthday to Jaggery chanteuse, Mali Sastri!

Review: Dawes and friends at the Royale ~ November 6

Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes

Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes

It was a gorgeous evening of music with Dawes, Vetiver, and Peter Wolf Crier at the Royale. A musically complimentary and excellent lineup, and Dawes seems to just be getting better and better as time goes on. The new songs they performed from their upcoming album sound incredible. See my full review on Ryan’s Smashing Life.

This year’s Boston Music Awards (a.k.a. the BMAs) will be presented on Sunday, December 5 at the Liberty Hotel, and is a fine excuse to host a bunch of cool bands. On Thanksgiving Day (a.k.a. the Native Americans’ National Day Of Mourning), Victor Robert Venckus presents his Annual WZBC Pow Wow. He’s been doing this, well, forever… over 20 years now. From noon until midnight, he’ll be playing Native American and Native American-inspired music in all possible genres, including rock, folk, country, traditional, new age, and spoken word. He’ll also have live reports from the demonstrations in Plymouth and possibly interviews regarding Native American spirituality and politics. Tune in to WZBC 90.3 FM, or listen online, for the perfect soundtrack for your Thanksgiving dinner or whatever you happen to be doing that day.

For all those interested in Native American Pow Wows and other cultural events, I’ll include this schedule of Pow Wows for New England and elsewhere.

The Fatal Flaw, The Hush Now, and The Sheila Divine @ Great Scott ~ Wednesday, November 24, 2010 (SOLD OUT)

Just as I’m getting to this, late as always, I see now that this show is sold out. So if you don’t have tickets, sorry. But I’d like to make a note of it, being as how it’s a big “Boston Band Spectacular”, and at least one of the bands is coming out of a kind of semi-retirement. So I’ll briefly profile all three. If you already know all about them and are going to Great Scott’s Wednesday night, awesome. If you don’t know about them, check ’em out. How’s that?

High time for another band roundup. We have the latest project from Morgan Kibbyh of M83, White Sea, whom I heard were fantastic at (the club formerly known as) Spaceland in Los Angeles Saturday night. Hope they come to Boston soon. There’s an amazing guitarist/singer-songwriter by the name of Christopher Paul Stelling, some dreamy New Zealand soundscapes from Glass Vaults, and prepared piano à la John Cage from Düsseldorf-based Hauschka. Prog rock and psychedelia from Louisville’s Wax Fang, the quirky pop of the oddly-named Mutual Benefit, and bizarre (but rather sweet) showman Darwin Deez. And oh yes, while we’re on the subject of strange band names, Boston’s own WhiteShoeBrownShoe.

Lucha VaVoom: Mexican Masked Wrestling, Burlesque & Comedy @ the Royale

LuchaVaVoom_EastCoastPoster

If you’re wondering how to possibly cap off The Dresden Dolls and Walter Sickert’s InkDrip Sessions… here’s an idea for you: Mexican Masked Wrestling and Burlesque. Lucha VaVoom will be making a stop at the Royale on Monday night. While I can’t quite imagine such an event at the distinguished and at least somewhat classy Royale, I imagine this might be just the sort of night, at the very least, for that smoke machine. I’m at a loss at how to even describe this spectacle, so I’ll let the video speak for itself.

A warm, gentle breeze should be blowing into chilly Boston on Saturday night (11/6), when Los Angeles band Dawes comes to town, along with Vetiver and Peter Wolf Crier, to the Royale. Expect some really fine introspective indie folk with lovely harmonies. It should be a nice, mellow and relaxing evening. more…
