Oh Land with Savoir Adore at Brighton Music Hall
Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Doors at 8 PM; Show at 9 PM; 18+ show
Advance Tickets $15

If you’re in the mood for some atmospheric synth pop on Wednesday evening, head over to Brighton Music Hall for Oh Land and Savoir Adore. Oh Land, fronted by Scandinavian fairy tale princess Nanna Øland Fabricius, is a pleasantly fluffy concoction infused with the sensibilities of a formally trained ballet dancer raised by an opera-singing mother and church organist father. Dance beats and whimsy propel things along. Supporting Oh Land is the lush and dreamy Savoir Adore, from Brooklyn, New York. They’ll be releasing their second album next year, but in the meantime, their latest single is “Dreamers,” available from Neon Gold Records.

Projektfest 2011 at The Middle East Downstairs
Saturday, November 12, 7pm doors
18+ | $20 | facebook event | Tickets

Presented by Dark Sky Productions and Projekt Records, it’s Projektfest 2011, a dark and atmospheric orgy of fine bands and also vendors and artisans. Featured artists include:

Black Tape For A Blue Girl

Theatrical, dark cabaret since 1986. Old favorites.

Voltaire

Extremely odd, and very unique. “Morbid humor, murder ballads, and other macabre favorites.”

WEEP (featuring Doc Hammer of The Venture Brothers)

A very nice ’80s inspired goth/synth pop sound. I reviewed their debut album for Hybrid Magazine; really like them. Fans of The Cure, New Order and The Psychedelic Furs take note!

with supporting local Boston artists Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling and Sugar Snow.

Introducing Yellow Ostrich ~ w/Ra Ra Riot and Delicate Steve at the Paradise Thursday night

Yellow Ostrich

Yellow Ostrich

Ra Ra Riot, with Delicate Steve and Yellow Ostrich
The Paradise Rock Club ~ Thursday, October 20
Doors at 8pm; 18+; Advance tickets $24.50 w/crappy ticketmaster fees

Here’s a very nice line-up, and by “nice” I mean exquisite: the pretty strings-infused chamber pop of Ra Ra Riot, bringing with them Delicate Steve, who has moments when he/they are anything but, and a wonderful newish band called Yellow Ostrich, who have just released their debut album, and who are quirky and strange as all hell. What a lovely combination.

Indoor Flea Market & Bloody Mary Bash, plus psychedelic synth pop from Portugal arrives at T.T’s tomorrow

Portugal's The Gift

Portugal's The Gift

The Gift (from Portugal) 10:35pm, The Clox 9:40pm, Rockin’ Flea Market & Bloody Mary Bash at T.T. the Bear’s 11-4pm

At first I thought this was just a very strange band name, but no, T.T.’s is having a flea market tomorrow. Being T.T.’s, it’s not just your standard flea market – it’s combined with a ‘Bloody Mary Bash.’ It promises cool vintage items & clothes, knick knacks, books, vinyl, arts & crafts, and other stuff. Plus a DJ, face-painting and photo booth, and yes of course, Bloody Marys and also Mimosas and spiked cider. In other words, a perfect event for an autumn Sunday.

You’ll probably need to go home and take a nap before coming back to welcome Portugal’s The Gift, who bring their psychedelic synth pop back to the states to celebrate their latest release. The most popular alternative band in Portugal, they’ve been together since 1994, toured in the U.S. with The Flaming Lips back in 2003, and have just released their new album Explode.

Made for You by The Gift Official

Joining The Gift will be New York’s (by way of Kazakhstan) The Clox.

Org: Asylum ~ featuring Jaggery, Amanda Palmer, Michael Pope, Ginger Ibex, Hello Dust & others
Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at 8pm
Club Oberon, 2 Arrow Street, Cambridge
18+, doors: 7:30pm; show starts at 8pm | $20/$15| tickets

Curated by Singer Mali (of Jaggery), the Org is an ongoing series of performance events that features an extremely eclectic range of performers and artists in a multimedia extravaganza — music, dance, visual art, film, performance art, spoken word… In this Org, Mali and her friends explore insanity and sanctuary, in what I can promise you will be a unique, fascinating, and probably disturbing evening (but in an awareness-expanding sort of way).

“Org: Asylum includes a short film shot on location at a local abandoned state mental institution, a butoh interpretation of Vaslav Nijinsky, a body-painting storyteller sharing tales of art-making and suicide attempts, and much more.”

Featured artists include: Jaggery, Amanda Palmer, Michael Pope, Bryan Papciak, Ginger Ibex, Karen Montanaro, UnAmerika’s Sweetheart Karin Webb, Hello Dust, Sarah Jocelyn, Jennifer Hicks, and others.

The Humans (featuring Toyah Willcox) with The Army of Broken Toys at Church of Boston tomorrow night!

The Humans with special guest Walter Sickert & The Army Of Broken Toys, Kid Savant
Sunday, September 25 at the Church of Boston
Doors at 7pm; 8pm show | 18+
Tickets: $12 in advance; $15 day of show

There’s so much about Toyah Ann Willcox I never knew. I was familiar with this wild-haired, exotically dressed creature from another planet that was pretty much the norm in the 1980s, though her voice set her apart. I remember her album, The Changeling, released in 1982. It was dark, gothic and sensuous, and a staple of my musical diet at the time. But I had no idea that she was also deeply immersed in an acting career – stage plays, film and television – since the mid ‘70s. She worked with Derek Jarman on his punk film Jubilee and The Tempest, and in 1979’s Quadrophenia. She appeared with Katharine Hepburn in the made-for-television movie The Corn is Green, and in many live theatrical roles. At the same time, she fronted a few bands before embarking on a solo music career in 1985.

A little nostalgia for the old folks…
