Back in December, Beck released his album Song Reader the way music was traditionally released—as sheet music, to be interpreted by those inspired to do so. This custom songbook contains 20 songs and over 100 pages of original art. It’s both a vintage and revolutionary idea, and was eight years in the making. A web site was set up where musicians (and budding musicians) could upload their renditions.

Inspired by this creative effort, 150 local performers (yes, that’s one hundred and fifty) have joined together to present their versions of songs from this album, ina live performance at Somerville Theatre in Davis Square on Thursday night. As stated in their press release, “On Thursday, February 28th Boston’s finest musicians & dancers are collaborating to bring Beck Hansen’s album “Song Reader” to life with live music & original choreography at the historic Somerville Theatre. Months in the making, this evening will feature over 150 musicians, dancers, performance artists and a choir performing new material based of Beck’s latest work. Don’t miss this ONE NIGHT ONLY show!”

To give you an idea of the scope of this, some of those performers are Sarah Rabdau, Molly Zenobia, SchoolTree, Jade Sylvan, UnAmerika’s Sweetheart Karin Webb, Kristen Ford Band, Mary Bichner, Vessela Stoyanova w/Tony Leva and Singer Mali. The show is produced by Burns and Webb. You can get a little preview of what’s planned for Thursday night on YouTube.

Anna Rae’s lived in a bunch of places – California raised, then North Dakota, Minnesota, Wyoming, and even Australia – but with her straight-up introspective lyricism and supple, gliding vocals, she fits right in to Boston’s indie folk scene. Having toured this summer with The Kristen Ford Band, she’s just released her debut album, Peddler’s Wares, which she’ll be introducing at her official CD release party at Club Passim tomorrow night. It’s a charming, sweet folk-Americana sound with sharp and slightly astringent lyrics.

It’ll be an evening of female musical prowess. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Samantha Farrell headlines, and multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist Kristen Ford opens.

“always feel I’m an outsider
always feel I’m an outlier, outright liar
and I always feel how I’m outside of the flow
and I always notice all the places I do not go”
– Midwest Darlin’

Boston Bands this week…

The Kristen Ford Band, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, Lori McKenna, and Cassavettes.

The Kristen Ford Band, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, Lori McKenna, and Cassavettes.

No fancy embellishment; just a quick rundown of some Boston-area bands of note this week, before the week’s over. Thursday is a busy night. The Kristen Ford Band is at Precinct (Union Square, Somerville) with Goli, Box Five, and School for Robots. Thursday also brings newly transplanted from Maine but now Boston local, the absolutely brilliant Lady Lamb The Beekeeper, to the Lizard Lounge, along with Angeline and Naked On Rollerskates. It also begins a three-night residency at Club Passim for folk songstress Lori McKenna. And on Saturday, Boston Americana-folk-rock favorite Cassavettes sadly performs their final show at the cozy Middle East Upstairs, joined by the Luxury and the Autumn Hollow Band.
