MojoSlim rocks out at Polcari’s in Saugus – Dec. 14, 2012

Who would have guessed there was a hot nightclub scene in Saugus? Hell, who would have guessed there was any sort of scene in Saugus. But when I skeptically ventured out and into Polcari’s on Route 1 to see R&B cover band extraordinaire MojoSlim, I stepped unwittingly into some kind of cosmic time warp back to a swinger lounge of the 1970s, with the vibe of a North Shore, Boston edition of Jersey Shore.

It was exactly as you’d imagine, seeing Middle-Aged White People getting sloppy and shakin’ it to R&B, Funk and Soul classics: hilarious. Since 1999, the 7-piece MojoSlim has been seriously jamming and paying loving tribute to many great artists, including Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, James Brown, Little Milton, Clarence Carter, Eddie Floyd, Freddy King and others. From their super-charismatic lead singer to a smoking horn section and drummer, very cool lead guitarist and funky bass player (who, in the interest of full disclosure, I must say also happens to be my neighbor Lou), these guys really rock. I’ll admit that on one or two occasions, I was one of those pathetic white people up on the tiny dance floor. If you’re in the Boston or North Shore area and you love those old style rock ‘n’ roll gems, you need to check these guys out.
