[Note: at this writing, the show is sold out, but I’ve been told that a limited number of additional tickets will likely be released, so keep an eye on the Paradise site and also Live Nation]

My first time seeing Friendly Fires was back in March, also at the Paradise. While I’ve never been a huge fan of or terribly knowledgeable about the British synth-pop dance scene, they were highly recommended to me as a band I should definitely check out. What impressed me then (and what I’m sure has been even more finely honed through a great deal of touring) was their explosive energy and enthusiasm, and the serious tribal groove and crazy frenzy they worked themselves and their delirious audience into.

The last time I saw Ted Drozdowski, it was back in the 90s performing with the experimental guitar, bass, and electronics orgy known as Blood Blister, which also included the irrepressible Reeves Gabrels on bass and a myriad of devices. At that time, Ted was also in bands like Vision Thing, Devil Gods, and probably others. Oh yeah, and he also did music reviews for The Boston Phoenix. I just learned that Ted had relocated, some time back, to Nashville, but he’s back in Boston with Scissormen, a bluesy, garagy, slide-guitar loving outfit that I guess is him and “some drummer”. Not sure who that drummer will be, but they’ll be over at Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, along with special guests Peter Parcek and The Ten Foot Pole Cats. Nor’easter be damned, I plan to be there.

P.S. The Scissormen will also be at Cantab Lounge in Cambridge on Monday night (11/16), as guests of Boston folk legend Geoff Bartley. It’s part of a “famed acoustic music night” at the Cantab. Open mike is at 8pm; they’ll go on around 9:30pm. The Cantab is located at 738 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA (Central Square).

Singer-songwriter Andrew Hoover will be opening for Sister Hazel at the Paradise Rock Club on October 21 (that’s tonight, in a few hours from now). Bluesy and soulful with pop influences; a nice sound that probably transfers very well live. Have a listen.

I had the pleasure seeing Sydney-based Youth Group at T.T.’s back in April. Very impressive. With a strong focus on the considerable songwriting and vocal abilities of Toby Martin (who also plays guitar), he’s joined by Danny Allen (drums), Cameron Emerson-Elliott (guitar) and Patrick Matthews (bass). They’ve been performing together since the late nineties, with a big following in Australia, having supported such artists as Elliott Smith and The Strokes. They became better known here in the U.S. when they toured with Death Cab For Cutie. Their music has been compared to Teenage Fanclub, Pavement, Matthew Sweet, and the aforementioned Death Cab. Toby Martin cites Teenage Fanclub as a strong influence.

Looks like the “Boston date” for this really excellent lineup is either Providence, Rhode Island (about an hour’s drive) or Hartford, Connecticut (about 2, but an easy drive via Mass Pike and I-84). Being how jam-packed this autumn is with bands coming through the area, I’m guessing it was a scheduling difficulty rather than an oversight that led to this sad state of affairs. If you can somehow make it, or find yourself in a place they’re performing (see entire schedule), it should be a fantastic show.

My earliest recollection of Daniel Johnston is hearing his now classic song “Speeding Motorcycle”, performed as a special over-the-phone collaboration with Yo La Tengo, for WFMU’s “The Music Faucet” show on February 4, 1990. Actually, this song from the hour-long session was on ‘heavy rotation’ over at Boston College’s WZBC, and it was early 90s that I heard it, when I first moved up here.

Ok, this is a big deal. I mean, it’s a huge deal. The Middle East, for those of you who haven’t been, is one of our best venues here in the Boston area, and even the larger 550-capacity downstairs room is small enough to feel intimate, besides being a really nice place to see live music. It’s a lovely thing, then, that this seminal indie band from the ’90s decided, rather than to play the House of Blues or the Orpheum (either of which they could easily sell out), instead to do three nights at The Middle East. Absolutely awesome.

The Bravery is a NYC-based band who have been around since 2003, though with their new wave/punk aesthetic, they sound like they’ve been around much longer than that. Definitely an 80’s thing going on, and I don’t mean that in a bad way! There’s Sam Endicott (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Michael Zakarin (lead guitar, backing vocals), John Conway (keyboards, backing vocals), Mike Hindert (bass, backing vocals), and Anthony Burulcich (drums, backing vocals).
