On tomorrow morning’s Expanding Awareness show, Victor’s topic with his guest will be “an explanation for psychic phenomena”. Tune in at 10am to WZBC 90.3fm or wzbc.org. If you miss it, you can also listen after the fact by visiting the WZBC Archive (all of ‘ZBC’s shows are online for two weeks).

First up – unvalentine’s day org – “song and stories of love lost, heart-break, break-ups, and the wreck love can leave you in.” An evening of festivities at Lizard Lounge, hosted by Jaggery’s Mali Sastri (they’ll be performing), and also featuring Lach, Trabants, Brian Carpenter & the Confessions, words by Edrie (of Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys), and stories by massmouth. Read more about it on Ryan’s Smashing Life.

Sore Eros lays on some cool vibes (literally), and Scottish lo-fi folk artist Withered Hand makes his U.S. debut. New Numbers harkens back to late 70s Bowie and Iggy – always a sound near and dear to my heart – and rootsy Los Angeles band The Morgansterns releases a warmly inviting debut on Microhits Music Corp.

Mixing 90s rock influences with a harder edge, snarling and sneering punk vocals, and a folkier sort of storytelling as well (as on the song “Exit 6”), The Nico Blues (from New Jersey) released their debut Blame the Boredom, Blame the Basements last summer. It was recorded, produced, and mixed by the band in their home studio, and can be listened to and downloaded (free of charge) at www.thenicoblues.com or www.thenicoblues.bandcamp.com. They’re making the trip up (in between snowstorms, I guess) to play at All Asia‘s ongoing CNC Indie Music Marathon, along with Skinny Cleveland and other bands “to be announced.”

Never mind the sold out Decemberists show at the House of Blues. If you’re looking for a serious party for your Friday night, look no further than T.T.’s, because they’ll be hosting the Ryan’s Smashing Life 4-Year Anniversary Celebration, featuring RIBS, The Cinnamon Fuzz, Bridges & Powerlines, and Fan-Tan. Hang out with the winners of the Boston Music Award for ‘Best Music Blog’ and check out some great bands!

Welcome to the first band roundup of the year, though we won’t say how long I’ve had these fine bands sitting in my inbox… In this first installment, there’s the dreamy space jams of Woodsman, beautiful harpist and folk singer-songwriter Meredith Godreau a.k.a. Gregory and the Hawk, and the mysterious desert music of Infantree. A warm, acoustic, both serene and haunting ‘comfy as an old pair of shoes’ EP from Sonny & the Sandwitches, and someone I’ve been impressed with for some time now, Danielle Ate The Sandwich.
