The Dead Marxist Trio, Happy Hollows

The Dead Marxist Trio, Happy Hollows

One of my favorite bands, The Happy Hollows, are embarking on a little tour beginning tonight in Washington, D.C., stopping off at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston next Monday. Psychedelic, experimental Boston-based The Dead Marxist Trio will be performing with them, which promises to be a nice evening for a mystical foray to another world.

Ah, I love The Happy Hollows. Powerful and magical, with Charlie Mahoney and Chris Hernandez getting a serious groove going, and the wild banshee goddess Sarah Negahdari summoning a myriad of curious spirits. They released their adventurous debut album Spells back in September of last year. You’ll probably not want to listen to a song like “Silver” straight out of the gate; let yourself build up to that one lest you be knocked cleanly off your chair. “High Wire” is a lovely introduction, if for some reason you’re not yet familiar, to Sarah’s fairytale vocals and inspired guitar playing. Throughout their repertoire and in a short span of time, she varies between Alice in Wonderland and Sybil.

Check out their latest video, directed by Ryan Reichenfeld, for “Big Bad Wolf” (one of the tracks from their five-track Spells b-sides release.

Joining them at O’Brien’s will be The Dead Marxist Trio, a far more complementary group of guys (I’m still giggling about the two southern rock bands who played with them at TT’s last time they were here…). The Trio is comprised of Tristan Brown (guitar, vocals), Rob Dewar (bass) and Braemar Bartlett (percussion). Bluesy and psychedelic, with experimental rhythms and key changes and a decidedly political lyrical bent. They’ve performing together since 2008, released their first demo back in September, and are now working on a debut EP. The prog-psych guitar and percussive combination is quite hypnotic, and I’m looking forward to seeing these guys in a live setting. Definitely recommended for those of you who like to go ‘way out there’ (ditto for The Happy Hollows too, of course!). By the way, “Duckling” inspired an especially nice hallucinogenic flashback, just thought I’d mention that.
