Boston Bands This Week…

Margin Walker, The Stereo Flys, and The Grave Reviews @ P.A.’s Lounge, Somerville, Saturday, March 20. 21+, 8:30pm doors, tix $10.

Just one featured band this week, due to exhaustion and a pile of other things to get to. Boston’s own The Stereo Flys are a happy, crunchy, distortion-loving psych-rock indie trio – Jeff Beam (guitar & vocals), Sam Peisner (bass) and Zander Kagle (drums).

Marching boldly into my latest installment of “Boston Bands This Week”. We start with “a classic”, Mary Lou Lord, whom I must be recalling from the early 90s when I first moved to Boston. She’s doing a special acoustic performance on Wednesday at Arts at the Armory in Somerville, which will probably sell out if it hasn’t already. Then there’s a few very cool bands playing at P.A.’s Lounge on Friday, including a personal favorite, the wacky and wonderful John Powhida International Airport. Finally on Saturday, there’s a CD release party for someone who just recently came to my attention, Somerville-based singer-songwriter Danielle Doyle, who’s joined, once again, by some cool local bands – this time, in the acoustic, ambient, and Americana vein.

Yep, it’s Wednesday. Yes, the first show I’m mentioning is happening tonight. And yes, actually, it just started. Any other questions? Good, I thought not. A very cool line-up of prog rock and pretty folk/pop at T.T.’s, and lovely folk-rockers Black Marmot’s CD release party (again at T.T.’s) tomorrow Saturday night. More Americana comes your way with Session Americana at Lizard Lounge Thursday & Friday, with notable performers (really notable) – check Lizard Lounge for important ticket info. And finishing up with HUMANWINE with Rob Potylo @ Center for the Arts At The Armory in Somerville on Saturday.

A busy time with lots of things to write about, so for now, I’m just going to mention this one Boston-area band event going on at Church. However, it’s actually a whole pile of bands taking part in the three-day New England Americana Festival, so I’ll briefly profile a few of the bands performing.

H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E.; Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys; Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling, and Sarah RabDAU at the Church of Boston – February 17, 2010

Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys

Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys

A most unusual and extraordinary evening of carnival, cabaret and social commentary, the perfect musical accompaniment to the controlled chaos that so often transpires inside my brain. Imagine a lifetime of scream-therapy; Cirque de Soleil, a tawdry Parisian brothel, and the Victorian Era; Dead Can Dance, an apocalyptic Hans Christian Anderson, and Democracy Now, stuffed into a dimly-lit hat box, and you’ll maybe come close to my experience seeing Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling; Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys; and H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E. at the Church of Boston Saturday night…

Asa Brebner’s CD Release Party at Precinct in Union Square, Somerville – February 13, 2010

Trying to discover that cool new indie band just ahead of everyone else is all well and good, but sometimes it’s nice to put on some comfy clothes, head on down to the basement of the old Somerville police department, and listen to some good old time rock ‘n’ roll. And sometimes it’s nice to see people past the age of 25 kicking it out past 1am. Actually, it’s really nice to see that. So it was at Asa Brebner‘s CD release party for Sueños De Los Muertos.

Here’s a few very cool local band events this week. There’s a three-day benefit for Haiti at The Middle East Downstairs; a three-day Jonathan Richman encampment at the Middle East Upstairs (which are all sold out, but you never know); and H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E. along with Walter Sickert and the Army Of Broken Toys, Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling, and Sarah RabDAU at the Church of Boston. On Saturday, Feb. 20, Asa Brebner and his Family Jewels grace the stage (such as it is) of the Plough & Stars in Cambridge for an afternoon show.

Welcome to another edition of Boston Bands This Week Weekend. Ok, yes, I screwed up again. As I’m running out of time (because I’m actually trying to get to this show), for now I’ll just quickly mention Asa Brebner’s CD Release Party, which is, um, tonight. And tomorrow I’ll profile a few shows happening next week. So, the irrepressible Asa Brebner has a super huge shindig planned for yes, tonight, to celebrate the release of his new album Suenos De Los Muertos.

The Bad Art Ensemble, Lone Pine Cones, and Rodfest 8

The Bad Art Ensemble, Lone Pine Cones, and Rodfest 8

Once again it’s midweek, and I’m just now doing this. How dumb, how like me. Just three bands/events are profiled, so I can get this posted before the first one actually happens. Which would be the Bad Art Ensemble, a proud Boston institution, who are at the teeny tiny Plough & Stars in Cambridge tonight. Another CNC Indie Music Marathon begins at 6pm on Friday at the All Asia Cafe (also in Cambridge), this time featuring – along with five others – the psychedelic dreamy space music of Lone Pine Cones, whom I’ve been enjoying as I write this. On Saturday, the Paradise hosts Rodfest 8, an annual benefit concert that honors the memory of a Stonehill College student, profits going to a memorial scholarship fund.

The most surreal of evenings began the moment I arrived at cafe 939’s Red Room. This utterly delightful and intimate (200-capacity) Twin Peaks-inspired venue immediately put me in the perfect mood for these amazingly talented otherworldly performers.
