Boston Bands This Week (01/20/10)…

The 1919 Boston Molasses Flood, Nick Flynn's memoir, Monkey Rock Writer's Circle, Rick Berlin, H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E., and Kellie Lin Knott (CNC Indie Music Marathon).

The 1919 Boston Molasses Flood, Nick Flynn's memoir, Monkey Rock Writer's Circle, Rick Berlin, H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E., and Kellie Lin Knott (CNC Indie Music Marathon).

So I stumbled upon some really interesting events, as per my usual, a few days before they’re happening. There’s the 1919 Boston Molasses Flood Commemoration benefit show at the Middle East Upstairs on Wednesday, and there’s also an uber-cool thing at Cafe 939 – Buffalo Tom will perform a short acoustic set before Nick Flynn reads from his new memoir. And a third thing on Wednesday, but apparently it happens every Wednesday at All Asia Cafe: Monkey Rock Writer’s Circle. On Thursday, notable Bostonian Rick Berlin and others perform at T.T. the Bear’s Place. At All Asia Cafe, there’s this ongoing CNC Indie Music Marathon which happens every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. And last, but most certainly not least, what promises to be a fascinating evening of music and performance – H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E., Mighty Tiny, and Laura Jorgensen at Berklee’s Cafe 939.

Racing to get this up. Kinda stupid, as the first bands are playing now. Oh well. I’ll try to do better next time. Tonight – David Wax Museum (cool Mexo-Americana) are at Toad; Jimmy Ryan & Hayride! tomorrow night at Lizard Lounge; and Friday night is the very cool and entertaining singer-songwriter-guitarist (and I would say comedian as well) Asa Brebner at Sally O’Brien’s in Union Square. Boston’s Mission Of Burma play at the Paradise Friday and Saturday nights; and The Broken River Prophet are at PA’s Lounge on Saturday.

Boston Bands This Week (12/28/09)…

So I thought there might just be a handful of New Year’s Eve shows this week, but alas, there are tons of Boston-area bands playing. Trying to get this up and out, so my apologies if I miss stuff (and feel free to let me know if I do). We got everything from hardcore to synth pop to soul to a Bim Skala Bim NYE’s bash at the Middle East (sold out, but maybe there’ll be a ticket or two outside). Quirky folkies (and I just love quirky folkies) at PA’s Lounge. And a shockingly cool line up with The Boston Pops this year. Wow, Amanda Palmer?! Really?? Happy 2010, and more Boston bands in the new year.

Happy winter solstice. Now go out, freeze your ass off, and see some bands.

Happy Winter Solstice. Now go out, freeze your ass off, and see some bands.

With snow on the ground (about 8″ on the North Shore; less I think in Boston?), we officially welcome the season of braving the elements and navigating around snow mounds for parking spaces to support our local bands.

The Elevator Drops, Cassavettes, Your Favorite Ex, Harry & The Potters

Well, I guess this isn’t going to be a weekly feature, but here’s some Boston-area bands playing this week anyway.

You can see The Secret Sea at Great Scott on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Supa Dupa! plays T.T. The Bear’s. On Thursday, Hallelujah The Hills is at the Middle East (downstairs). On Friday, Monique Ortiz performs at Toad, and Elevator Drops plays at the Middle East (downstairs) for, apparently, a one-time-only reunion. On Saturday, Your Favorite Ex does an afternoon show at the Middle East (upstairs) as part of a “Boston Music Spotlight”, and Street Dogs play the Paradise. At Toad on Saturday, folk-rock/Americana group Cassavettes are performing with the rootsy Don’t Kill Antz. There’s a cool show on Sunday at the Middle East (downstairs) – The 5th Annual Yule Ball, a Harry Potter-inspired extravaganza featuring Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, Whomping Willows, MC Kreacher, and more. And Street Dogs are at the Paradise again.

It was a lovely evening of New England bands, hand-picked by Deli Magazine New England‘s Associate Editor, Meghan Chiampa, and as diverse as the website’s eclectic musical focus. This was to celebrate The Deli officially making its welcome foray into the New England states. Now based in Boston, she started writing for them in Burlington Vermont. This excellent online magazine covers the indie music scenes in NYC, L.A., San Francisco, Chicago, Nashville, and elsewhere.

A quick introduction. I’m going to start posting previews of selected shows in the Boston area for the following week which feature local bands. My hope is for this to be a new weekly feature on ‘musings’. We’ll see how it goes.

This week: some great Boston-area bands to see, from dance music at the Middlesex Lounge, to “best punk act of 2009” at T.T.’s (as part of their Thanksgiving Eve Fiasco), the Pixies @ The Wang Theatre, and a cool launch party for The Deli/New England at The Middle East Upstairs.

“Umpteenth Annual” WZBC Pow Wow hosted by Victor Robert Venckus

The Annual WZBC Pow Wow
hosted by Victor Robert Venckus
Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26th, 12 noon – 12 midnight
WZBC 90.3FM or online at WZBC.org

On Thanksgiving Day (a.k.a. the Native Americans’ National Day Of Mourning), Victor Robert Venckus presents his Annual WZBC Pow Wow. He’s been doing this, well, forever… over 20 years now. From noon until midnight, he’ll be playing Native American and Native American-inspired music in all possible genres, including rock, folk, traditional, new age, and spoken word. He’ll also have live reports from the demonstrations in Plymouth and possibly interviews regarding Native American spirituality and politics. Tune in to WZBC 90.3 FM, or listen online, for the perfect soundtrack for your Thanksgiving dinner or whatever you happen to be doing that day.

To commemorate this event, I’ll do a brief profile on a local group called The Wolf Cry Singers, whom Victor will be playing that day.
