The Scissormen, Peter Parcek, and The Ten Foot Pole Cats at Lizard Lounge in Cambridge 11/14/09

The Scissormen - Matt Snow, Larry Dersch, Ted Drozdowski

The Scissormen - Matt Snow, Larry Dersch, Ted Drozdowski

If you’re a guitar aficionado and lover of the mind-blowing riff, a connoisseur of brain-bending slide guitar sorcery, were anywhere in the vague vicinity of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and you weren’t at the Lizard Lounge to witness Peter Parcek and then Ted Drozdowski and his Scissormen, I feel really, really sorry for you. When I say it was an evening of guitar showmanship, I don’t mean that in a pretentious, self-satisfied rock-god poseur sort of way. I mean whiskey-soaked, venerable bluesmen blasting cobwebs out of dusty, unkempt corners of smokey Southern barrooms. Something timeless, and soul-satisfying.

Reeves Gabrels and his Imaginary Fri3nds at The Regent Theatre, Arlington, MA, July 22, 2009

Reeves Gabrels and his Imaginary Friends @ The Regent Theatre

Reeves Gabrels and his Imaginary Friends @ The Regent Theatre

It’s always difficult to begin a story, and none so much as this review of Reeves Gabrels and his Imaginary Friends at The Regent Theatre in Arlington.

See, Reeves and I go way back. The last time I’d seen him play was… my god, was it one of the Tin Machine shows from 1991?? Or maybe a Bentmen extravaganza from around that same time? Whatever it was, it feels like a previous lifetime, one that swirls around half-remembered in my consciousness like a scene from Un Chien Andalou.

Happy Mother’s Day: Thrashy, Garagy Fun at the Middle East Upstairs, May 10, 2009

Vivian Girls at the Middle East Upstairs

Vivian Girls at the Middle East Upstairs

One relatively new band I have been hearing about who I “would have seen had I been able to go to Coachella” is the Vivian Girls. When I heard they’d be playing at the Middle East Upstairs, I couldn’t believe my good fortune, as I assumed they were already playing places much larger than that. They were supported by the Libyans and Stupid Party, and judging from the quick listens on MySpace, I was prepared for a thrashy, garagy, ear-bleeding good time. I was not disappointed.

A Weekend In Somerville: Jonathan Richman Tribute/Arts Council Benefit & Somerville Open Studios

This past weekend turned out to be “Focus on Somerville”, a little stomp around my old neighborhood. I mourn the loss of The Someday Cafe and cheap apartments (long, long gone), but some of the bohemia of yore remains, and there’s still cool stuff going on.

I managed to get a Friday night off and headed to Toad again to catch a few bands. I’m hesitant to repeat what a nice, cozy place this is to see music in, because it gets packed enough as it is. But it is a cool little venue, and they have some really great performances – albeit some noisy and clueless patrons. But more about that in a minute [yes, it’s going to be another one of Julie’s rants, so buckle up.].

Forest Henderson (from their MySpace page)

Forest Henderson (Boston/Allston, MA) features: Billy Hubbard–Vocals and Guitar, Matt Ott–Guitar and Vocals, Chris Reckert–Bass, and Skye Mazuroski–Drums. Which of course begs the question “who is Forest Henderson?”

Steve Brodsky and The Autumn Hollow Band at Toad in Cambridge, MA, April 4, 2009

Yes, I got myself off my little island again to see a show, and I’m really glad I did. I’d never been inside Toad for any considerable length of time… nice place! Cozy, rather shaped like a shoebox with the “stage” at the far end, and a slightly raised area off to the right when you first walk in. Tables on the right, bar on the left, narrow walkway down the middle, and there you have it! A cool place for live music, but definitely get there early if the band(s) playing are popular at all. Otherwise, you might have to wait outside for a bit until someone squeezes out so you can squeeze in (I’m guessing about 100 maximum capacity, if that).
