Local Natives with Suckers @ Great Scott ~ May 8, 2010

Local Natives at Great Scott

Local Natives at Great Scott

So I’m a little late in reviewing this show (it’s been a weird few months), but I happened to turn on WFNX, just in time to hear “WFNX, where new music starts – Local Natives, ‘Airplanes.'” Wow. Yeah, ok, they’re not really new, and the monumental song in question was on a 5-track EP of early studio tracks and a Daytrotter Session that they were selling at shows back in January 2009, just after they had moved from Orange County to Silverlake in Los Angeles. But it’s great to see them getting recognition so well-deserved. They’ve toured all around Europe and the U.S. now and have a huge following, but this ‘FNX nod made me happy. Because it means a lot of new listeners ahead of their August 5 show at The Middle East. So I’ll take the opportunity to boast that I was amongst the first in Boston to know of this great band. True, I didn’t get to see them play their first shows at the Silverlake Lounge or Spaceland, but being ‘East Coast challenged,’ I do what I can.

Dawes, Corey Chisel & The Wandering Sons, and Jason Boesel at Great Scott, Allston – February 20, 2010

Dawes at Great Scott

I can’t think of a nicer way to reward oneself for making it this far through a cold and nasty winter than heartfelt heartland Americana and a warm blast of California sunshine. What an inspired triple bill – Jason Boesel (part of a recent Laurel Canyon musical resurgence along with his friends from Dawes), plus Corey Chisel & the Wandering Sons, who hail from Appleton, Wisconsin, but share their love for upfront, honest and unpretentious lyrics, warm and sincere harmonies and soulful alt-country melodies. A beautiful evening of music that felt like a big, warm hug.

Boston Bands This Week…

The Elevator Drops, Cassavettes, Your Favorite Ex, Harry & The Potters

The Elevator Drops, Cassavettes, Your Favorite Ex, Harry & The Potters

Well, I guess this isn’t going to be a weekly feature, but here’s some Boston-area bands playing this week anyway.

You can see The Secret Sea at Great Scott on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Supa Dupa! plays T.T. The Bear’s. On Thursday, Hallelujah The Hills is at the Middle East (downstairs). On Friday, Monique Ortiz performs at Toad, and Elevator Drops plays at the Middle East (downstairs) for, apparently, a one-time-only reunion. On Saturday, Your Favorite Ex does an afternoon show at the Middle East (upstairs) as part of a “Boston Music Spotlight”, and Street Dogs play the Paradise. At Toad on Saturday, folk-rock/Americana group Cassavettes are performing with the rootsy Don’t Kill Antz. There’s a cool show on Sunday at the Middle East (downstairs) – The 5th Annual Yule Ball, a Harry Potter-inspired extravaganza featuring Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, Whomping Willows, MC Kreacher, and more. And Street Dogs are at the Paradise again.

Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks and Brakesbrakesbrakes at Great Scott in Allston, October 7, 2009

A lovely evening for Anglophiles. And for Scotsmen – or Irishmen, as the case would be here in Boston. Apart from the apt choice of venue, a particularly boisterous and no doubt ale-fueled Irish fellow up front repeatedly – and loudly – professed his kinship with the two Scottish bands. Irish, Scottish – ah hell, close enough. Which only added to the celebratory, over-the-top enthusiasm of the nicely packed-in crowd.
