Boston Bands This Weekend…

BBTW18-400

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everyone – and let’s see how quickly I can do this and get it up. Starting tonight, there’s a four-day extravaganza over at Passim called The Campfire Festival. It’s quite a good bargain for the price, with loads of fantastic local artists and bands (just found the schedule, so click on in for details). Also tonight, I’ll be heading over to Lizard Lounge to check out Club d’Elf along with special guests Randy Roos, and – from the wilds of Nashville – Mr. Reeves Gabrels, who will surely be engaging in some mighty fine guitar wankery sorcery.

Food Not Bombs 30th Anniversary Celebration on Boston Common – tomorrow! (Sun, May 23)

FoodNotBombs30th

Last minute notice, but the highly respected, awesome Boston organization Food Not Bombs are celebrating their 30th Anniversary (dubbed “Soupstock”) with a huge celebration on Boston Common tomorrow, May 23, from 12-5pm.

Food Not Bombs was born out of a collective in Boston/Cambridge in the early 80′s and has since spread all over the world. They’ve been providing free (delicious and vegan) food to Boston area people and helping the homeless for all these years. A very, very worthy cause, so get down to the Boston Common and show your support!

Boston Bands This Week 05/19/10…

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Welcome to the one-minute edition of Boston Bands this week. Coming up, well, right now, at the Lizard Lounge is “Boston-based siren rock/torture chamber pop ensemble” Jaggery. Tomorrow (Thursday) begins the ThirdThursdays @ The Rosebud concert series, with Jeddo Stars (with former members of The Charms) and Seven Shades of Grey. And Saturday night at the Middle East Upstairs is HUMANWINE, Mighty Tiny, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, and Dave Magario. It’s being billed as “an amazingly eclectic night of off-kilter rock ‘n’ roll.” Oh yes indeed.

Last second preview here, for a very interesting show I’ve just heard about, happening tonight. But if this is too short notice, it goes on every month at Oberon in Cambridge, just outside Harvard Square. If you’re in the mood for some provocative and waaayyyy ‘outside the box’ cabaret/burlesque, you’ll probably want to have a look at Bent Wit.

Boston Bands This Week (05/03/10)…

John Shade and Zac Taylor

John Shade and Zac Taylor

Two Boston-area musicians featured this week. There’s John Shade, a singer-songwriter performing with a string quartet (nice!) at the Lizard Lounge Tuesday night (that’s tomorrow), as part of a three-week residency. Then there’s Zac Taylor, guitarist/songwriter (guitarist for Vivian Darkbloom, whom I had the pleasure of seeing last month). He has a CD release party for his solo debut, Salesman, at cafe 939, where he’ll be joined by his backing band and horn section, “The Drugs” (plus a few guests).

TONIGHT: Vivian Darkbloom @ the Middle East Upstairs, with Seven Shades Of Grey, Hannah & The Bloodlines, and See Green

I’m going to profile one band this week, Boston’s Vivian Darkbloom. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform with The Airborne Toxic Event last week, in a special ‘invite only’ show, part of Jack Daniel’s Studio No. 7 series. I was going to do the review first, tell you how much I enjoyed these ace musicians and technology geeks from MIT and Harvard, and then give some background and highly recommend their upcoming show at the Middle East as part of my ‘Boston Bands This Week’ feature. But I had a problem. As soon as I began to wade through my 140 photos and 10 videos, I came to a realization: if you’re a Boston band and you’d like this particular reviewer to give you some blog love in a timely fashion (they’re playing the Middle East Upstairs Wednesday night) it might not be the best idea to perform on the same bill as Airborne Tox. So I’ll have this serve “double duty” – a few words about Vivian Darkbloom’s powerful set at the Royale to an appreciative audience, and a mini-profile/show preview.

[I’m not entirely sure tickets are still available for these shows. The ticket site says ‘no advance tickets remaining’ but that they ‘may be available at the door on night of performance’. It doesn’t say it’s sold out, however, so I’ll go ahead and do a preview anyway.]

As I’m heading into what promises to be one wacky month of delicious music, once again I’ll be featuring just two shows for this week. First, there’s some smooth R&B/jazz/pop performers at cafe 939, including Merrily James, for her debut CD release party. I don’t cover this style of music too often, but these folks are really good, and café 939 is a wonderful stripped-down and intimate venue. That’s the sort of place to hear some pretty singing… seriously. At the completely opposite end of the spectrum is the Middle East Upstairs “Goth Fest” (with some folk and electro-industrial) on Sunday, with 1476, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Emmy Cerra, Lucretia’s Daggers, and Sans Nomenclature.

Featured this week, just barely, is: a wildly crazy April Fool’s show at Church (Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys, Mighty Tiny, HUMANWINE, and Somerville Symphony Orkestar); dance night on Friday at Great Scott, with special live guests The Daily Pravda; a Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling CD release party at Church on Saturday; and for folk/Americana fans – a CD release party at the Middle East for Kingsley Flood, which also features the very popular Boston Americana group, Cassavettes.

Craziness abounds on ‘musings’ right now, and in April I have plans to see (and cover) perhaps as many as ten shows, so I’m scaling this back a bit. This week, I’ll have a quick look at two shows happening Thursday and Friday night – from theatrical otherworldly cabaret (OwlWatcher, Jaggery, Walter Sickert And The Army Of Broken Toys, HUMANWINE); to the bluesy, rootsy, and down-to-earth (Orchestra Morphine, Treat Her Right).
