Every so often the stars align and we have an auspicious evening on our hands here in Boston. Tomorrow night is such a night. You have (among other things), the choice between old-time-folky Brown Bird (whom I can wickedly highly recommended, after having seen them at the Newport Folk Festival) along with Coyote Kolb and Mister Sister; a multimedia extravaganza in tribute to the immensely brilliant (and my favorite author), Kurt Vonnegut Jr; and a time-travel adventure back to the ’80s with The Human League and Men Without Hats (bring along your big hair).

Presented by Morgan’s Hotel Group, The MuseBox and DigBoston

There’s an exciting new showcase for up-and-coming bands, a free music series called The Ames Sessions, taking place on three consecutive Tuesday evenings in Woodward Park at Boston’s Ames Hotel. Not to be confused with The Ames Sessions that were in collaboration with WFNX (which was indoors, very limited capacity, and you had to win tickets), this one is completely free and open to the public. The performances are September 20th (this coming Tuesday) with Anna Rose and Leo Blais, September 27th with The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and Supercute, and October 4th with Kim Boekbinder and Audrey Ryan. In addition to hearing some fine music in an intimate setting, there will be specials and prizes to coincide with each event.

It seems the Ames Hotel is requesting that people R.S.V.P. for the shows they’d like to attend. This is probably because Woodward Park is actually the outdoor patio area of their Woodward Tavern (meaning, it’s *very* small and intimate). It looks like an amazing setting for live music.

Yes, I’m getting to this one just as the first band is coming on. However, I’ve been remiss in mentioning this wonderful concert series that has been going on for some time now, put on by the folks at Fenway Recordings and featuring marvelous ‘up and coming’ buzz bands, plus a few more well-known favorites in surprisingly intimate venues. More on these guys and their great shows when time isn’t of the essence. Tonight and tomorrow, they have two of these showcases on tap, at Brighton Music Hall. Tonight there’s the upbeat energy and pretty harmonies of Grouplove (a band comprised of two New Yorkers, two Los Angelinos, and a Londoner) with the gentle, dreamy acoustic sounds of Young Man (a.k.a. Colin Caulfield). Tomorrow night, Aussies You Am I are joined by Toronto-based Sloan and from Los Angeles, Taylor Locke (formerly of Rooney) and the Roughs. That’s a hell of a lot of geography covered.

Why “Caveman”? Why not “Primordial,” or “Palaeolithic,” or “Troglodyte,” or “Aborigine”? Never mind; all that matters is that their music is luxuriously primative, dreamy space pop with 4-part harmonies, little blasts of cosmic madness, and some hypnotic tribal drumming.

Since coming together at the start of 2010, Caveman have already toured with some impressive bands – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Wye Oak and Yuck.

To celebrate their debut album, CoCo Beware (digital release 9/13; CD and vinyl on 11/15), they’re on tour with The War On Drugs, and will be decending on The Brighton Music Hall on Sunday night to caress and then melt your ears for a little while.

If you’re in New York next month, you can celebrate the release at the Mercury Lounge on September 15th.

Bob Dylan and his band @ the House of Blues Sunday Night

There’s this promising ‘up-and-coming’ singer-songwriter from Duluth, Minnesota, going by the name of Bob Dylan, who has been composing some pretty good songs and performing around locally for a few years. He accompanies himself primarily on guitar and harmonica, and dabbles in a variety of styles, from folk to blues, gospel, country, alt-country and rock, with a curiously grating vocal style that I actually find quite endearing. His songs have a special poignancy (and some of them are quite long), but it’s unknown if he can appeal to a larger audience. Nevertheless, it’s a gamble he’s willing to take, as he’ll be playing with his band at the 2400 capacity House of Blues on Sunday night.

One of my personal favorites – the dark, luscious and mysterious Jaggery – is in the midst of some special performances at the cozy Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, for their first ever residency. Supporting them are some of Boston’s most fascinating musicians with new bands and projects.

Boston multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Mike Fiore of Faces On Film will (with a full band) be performing music from his beautifully dreamy just reissued Some Weather album (Nice Music Group). It’s an attractive mix of 60s Brit, Americana and old-timey. He’ll be joined by San Francisco musician Mirah. Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn has been performing since 1997, releasing over a dozen recordings (most recently on K Records), and collaborating with such artists as Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Black Cat Orchestra, Phil Elvrum (Microphones), and Tune-Yards. Her latest recording, with Thao Nguyen (with whom she’s toured) features her sweetly disarming, precocious vocals, which then take off and seriously wail when you least expect it. Spinning tunes between sets will be DJ LeahV. The concert is in a lovely outdoor setting, the MFA’s Calderwood Courtyard.

Sun Boxes Live at deCordova

Sun Boxes vacationing at the Vineyard.

Sun Boxes vacationing at the Vineyard.

Here’s something nice for your yoga or meditation hour: Sun Boxes, a solar-powered sound installation by Craig Colorusso. Peaceful, dreamy, and eco-friendly. What more could you ask for? Here’s the nuts & bolts of the operation, as described on his blog:

“Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit at will. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time.”

The Sun Boxes will be “performing” at Artscape in Baltimore, Maryland July 15-17, and at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Mass. on Saturday, August 6.

Darwin Deez Returns to Boston: Brighton Music Hall, Saturday, July 16

DarwinDeezCD
It’s the East Coast return of the extraordinarily odd, danceable and downright charming Darwin Deez. His self-titled debut had a physical release on May 23rd, and he’s been touring for the past year and a half. At first listen, his music (and perky, upbeat vocals) might seem over-the-top cheerful and cheesy, but a careful listen reveals enough melancholy and sarcasm to give the sticky sweet syrup a surprisingly pleasant sourness and bite.

“Little yellow fish are happy it’s not so tough / would everything you wish you had be good enough?” – Deep Sea Divers

Supporting him will be dreamy psych-pop Lucky Number label mates Caged Animals.
