Boston Bands This Weekend…

BBTW18-400

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everyone – and let’s see how quickly I can do this and get it up. Starting tonight, there’s a four-day extravaganza over at Passim called The Campfire Festival. It’s quite a good bargain for the price, with loads of fantastic local artists and bands (just found the schedule, so click on in for details). Also tonight, I’ll be heading over to Lizard Lounge to check out Club d’Elf along with special guests Randy Roos, and – from the wilds of Nashville – Mr. Reeves Gabrels, who will surely be engaging in some mighty fine guitar wankery sorcery.

Jimmy Gnecco, the lead singer for Ours (Distorted Lullabies, 2001; Precious, 2002; and Mercy, 2008), is set to release his solo debut, The Heart, due out July 20 on Bright Antenna. Holy shit, this guy can really sing. He’s currently touring with L.A. songwriter Greg Laswell (who has a new album just out called Take A Bow), and will be at the Paradise tonight (Thursday). Also on the bill is singer-songwriter Brian Wright (Brian Wright & The Waco Tragedies), who also plays piano, mandolin, harmonica. A nice soulful, folky Americana. Three very personal and intelligent songwriters in one evening – definitely worth checking out.

Boston Bands This Week 05/19/10…

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Mali Sastri of Jaggery

Welcome to the one-minute edition of Boston Bands this week. Coming up, well, right now, at the Lizard Lounge is “Boston-based siren rock/torture chamber pop ensemble” Jaggery. Tomorrow (Thursday) begins the ThirdThursdays @ The Rosebud concert series, with Jeddo Stars (with former members of The Charms) and Seven Shades of Grey. And Saturday night at the Middle East Upstairs is HUMANWINE, Mighty Tiny, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, and Dave Magario. It’s being billed as “an amazingly eclectic night of off-kilter rock ā€˜n’ roll.” Oh yes indeed.

Last second preview here, for a very interesting show I’ve just heard about, happening tonight. But if this is too short notice, it goes on every month at Oberon in Cambridge, just outside Harvard Square. If you’re in the mood for some provocative and waaayyyy ‘outside the box’ cabaret/burlesque, you’ll probably want to have a look at Bent Wit.

Boston Bands This Week (05/03/10)…

John Shade and Zac Taylor

John Shade and Zac Taylor

Two Boston-area musicians featured this week. There’s John Shade, a singer-songwriter performing with a string quartet (nice!) at the Lizard Lounge Tuesday night (that’s tomorrow), as part of a three-week residency. Then there’s Zac Taylor, guitarist/songwriter (guitarist for Vivian Darkbloom, whom I had the pleasure of seeing last month). He has a CD release party for his solo debut, Salesman, at cafe 939, where he’ll be joined by his backing band and horn section, “The Drugs” (plus a few guests).

Frightened Rabbit

Yowsa, what a delightful onslaught of really great bands coming through Boston right now! Though I see their Paradise show tomorrow night is sold out, I have to give a brief mention of a band I briefly profiled late last year, Frightened Rabbit.

Film: Searching for Elliott Smith (documentary) @ Somerville Theatre – tomorrow night!

ElliottSmith

There’s a screening tomorrow night of Searching For Elliott Smith, a documentary by Gil Reyes. I didn’t even know there was such a thing. And I’ve only found out about this just now from someone on my Indie Rock Boston meetup group… It’s part of what’s now the tail-end of Boston’s Independent Film Festival. I’m notoriously out of the loop, but thanks to this one guy, I heard about this before it was too late. Just barely.

It’s playing Mon. April 26 (that’s tomorrow) 7:30pm at the Somerville Theatre, Davis Square, Somerville. You can get tickets here. I see now that the filmmaker, Gil Reyes, will be there to answer questions after the screening. Absolutely fantastic.

I’m rather late out of the gate with this one, but there’s a cool show coming up tomorrow night at Passim with a trio of very talented people – Marti Jones (singer-songwriter; has supported Marshall Crenshaw, T-Bone Burnett) and Don Dixon (producer REM, The Smithereens) featuring Kelley Ryan (astroPuppees). They’ll be performing both solo material and collaborations from Kelley Ryan’s debut solo album Twist (which was produced by Dixon with backing vocals from Jones).

This promises to be a magical evening of deeply satisfying Eastern European music with an Old World flavor and modern spices tossed in, plus some crazy gypsy punk revelry.
