Expanding Awareness: The Hopi Prophesies

Actually, due to technical difficulties, this show never happened. It’s been postponed until Saturday, 9/24…

On Expanding Awareness tomorrow morning, Victor and his guest will be discussing The Hopi Prophesies of 2012. This has been a perennial subject for years, having to do with the end date of a particular cycle in the Mayan calendar. According to researcher Joseph Robert Jochmans, “Both the Hopis and Mayans recognize that we are approaching the end of a World Age… In both cases, however, the Hopi and Mayan elders do not prophesy that everything will come to an end. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age into another. The message they give concerns our making a choice of how we enter the future ahead. Our moving through with either resistance or acceptance will determine whether the transition will happen with cataclysmic changes or gradual peace and tranquility.” Always an interesting subject with many different opinions, and until recently, rather far away. Right, not so much anymore. What do you think is going to happen? Anything? Nothing? Tune in and call up to discuss. They’re at 90.3FM in the Boston area (the interview begins at 10am), or this show can be heard after the fact on the WZBC Archive. All of ‘ZBC’s shows are online for two weeks.

Welcome to the War

Once again I wake up with the fear. What am I afraid of? I say I want to write, that in my heart I know that’s what I’m meant to do, but then I can’t, or just won’t. Am I afraid of taking a chance, afraid of making a wrong turn, afraid of what the future holds, afraid I may use the wrong words? I’ll force myself anyway, come what may. Because I can’t continue on like this for another moment. The thought of fully entering into the realm of madness fills me with more fear than anything else. So I’ll take the chance. My salvation perhaps, that which keeps me free of yet another drug addiction, socially acceptable or not.

The worst part is this inability to concentrate. It’s full-blown warfare inside my head. The battle rages, but the soldiers are no longer under the orders of a central commander. Instead they run this way and that with various odd weaponry and ammunition. A cannon here, a musket there. Someone has an AK-47; another has what appears to be some sort of nuclear device. And all with wild looks in their eyes, under their own delusional orders, with unshakable faith in their own personal gods or demons.

UFO Festival in Exeter, New Hampshire! – *tomorrow*

Looking for something special to do tomorrow? Well, here it is. Exeter, New Hampshire is having its 3rd Annual UFO Festival. Speakers include the legendary Stanton T. Friedman, Richard Dolan, MUFON New England director Steve Firmani, and others. Jeff and Jess Finn will be presenting premiering their documentary, Strange Septembers: The Hill Abduction & The Exeter Encounter. There’s activities for kids and families – ET & UFO drawings, storytelling, crafts and games, UFO craft construction – and what’s sure to be my personal favorite, an Alien Pet Costume Contest (there’s a kid’s costume contest as well). In the evening, there’s a panel discussion and then live music. It runs 8am to 10pm. Peruse their site for the full schedule and directions. And here’s the best part: IT’S ALL FREE!

Road Kill

Fear and loathing on the North Shore.

He came darting out suddenly toward my right front tire – fearful, nervous, yet determined. Much the same as me around that god-forsaken rotary that spews people out gratefully like paint from a Spin Art machine.

New club AND record store in Union Square, Somerville!

Here’s some very cool news for music fans in the Boston area. There’s a new club in town, and a new record store as well (yes, a record store), both moving into what’s turning out to be the next Hipster Haven, Union Square in Somerville. Already there’s P.A’s Lounge, Sally O’Brien’s, Precinct and Starlab. Add to that Radio, which has its grand opening October 7. And while you’re waiting for the first band to come on, you can do a little rekkid shopping at Somerville Grooves.

Why “Caveman”? Why not “Primordial,” or “Palaeolithic,” or “Troglodyte,” or “Aborigine”? Never mind; all that matters is that their music is luxuriously primative, dreamy space pop with 4-part harmonies, little blasts of cosmic madness, and some hypnotic tribal drumming.

Since coming together at the start of 2010, Caveman have already toured with some impressive bands – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Wye Oak and Yuck.

To celebrate their debut album, CoCo Beware (digital release 9/13; CD and vinyl on 11/15), they’re on tour with The War On Drugs, and will be decending on The Brighton Music Hall on Sunday night to caress and then melt your ears for a little while.

If you’re in New York next month, you can celebrate the release at the Mercury Lounge on September 15th.

There’s this promising ‘up-and-coming’ singer-songwriter from Duluth, Minnesota, going by the name of Bob Dylan, who has been composing some pretty good songs and performing around locally for a few years. He accompanies himself primarily on guitar and harmonica, and dabbles in a variety of styles, from folk to blues, gospel, country, alt-country and rock, with a curiously grating vocal style that I actually find quite endearing. His songs have a special poignancy (and some of them are quite long), but it’s unknown if he can appeal to a larger audience. Nevertheless, it’s a gamble he’s willing to take, as he’ll be playing with his band at the 2400 capacity House of Blues on Sunday night.

Wed, August 24th: Jaggery with Foolish Ida
Wed, August 31st: Jaggery with Hello Dust (formerly Now You)

One of my personal favorites – the dark, luscious and mysterious Jaggery – is in the midst of some special performances at the cozy Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, for their first ever residency. Supporting them are some of Boston’s most fascinating musicians with new bands and projects.
