George Glass: Welcome Home

Coming out of their previous incarnation as Death To Anders, in Autumn 2009 Nicholas Ceglio (guitar, vocals) and Peter DiBiasio (bass) joined forces with a “mysterious Bay Area drifter,” drummer Nathan Kondor, to become George Glass. They released their debut self-titled EP in October 2010, and performed around Silver Lake and Echo Park, Los Angeles. This is their debut music video from their self-titled EP released in October of last year. The Buster Keaton-style video features the effervescent Sarah Negadhari of The Happy Hollows.

I’m not feeling terribly clever today, so I’ll just say that I first came across these guys as Death to Anders, in the midst of my Silver Lake Awakening a few years ago, and mentioned their George Glass rebirth back in February of last year, when Web in Front first streamed their demo “Call it Whatever.” Since their self-titled debut, they also released a 3-track EP called Sunshine.

While I didn’t get out nearly as much as I would have liked in this crazy year, what I did see was pretty wonderful. New Year’s Resolution: See More Live Shows! Here’s my top ten list, in chronological order.

A Sweet Summer Evening with The Happy Hollows (& The Sinbusters, The Dead Marxist Trio) ~ June 21, 2010

The Happy Hollows in serious action at O'Brien's Pub.

It seems unbelievable that one can still see The Happy Hollows in a tiny, low-key establishment like O’Brien’s Pub. Why the hell isn’t this amazing band stupidly huge by now??

The Dead Marxist Trio, Happy Hollows

The Dead Marxist Trio, Happy Hollows

One of my favorite bands, The Happy Hollows, are embarking on a little tour beginning tonight in Washington, D.C., stopping off at O’Brien’s Pub in Allston next Monday. Psychedelic, experimental Boston-based The Dead Marxist Trio will be performing with them, which promises to be a nice evening for a mystical foray to another world.

Sarah Negahdari, Chris Hernandez, and Charles Mahoney of The Happy Hollows.

While they’re not going to be stopping in Boston (truly a bummer, but they did try and couldn’t get anything scheduled), the awesome Happy Hollows will be crossing the great expanse to play a few shows here on the East Coast. If you’re not familiar with these guys yet, what are you waiting for? They’re pretty and ethereal, crazy and experimental, mystical and kinda whimsical as well.

East Coast Shows

Mar 3 – 9:00P – Black Cat Black Cat – Washington DC
Mar 4 – 8:00P – The North Star – Philadelphia, PA
Mar 5 – 11:30P – Cakeshop – NYC, NY

There’s been lots of exciting stuff going on for my favorite Eastside L.A. bands, which I first profiled in my “Silverlake Roundup” – Part One and Part Two. I’ll be including those I have some info. for; if I’m leaving anything out (or got anything wrong), please let me know. Stay tuned for a batch of new bands from – or who regularly play at clubs – in this area (which, to be technically accurate, comprises Silverlake, Los Feliz, Echo Park, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, etc.). But for now, read on…

Happy Hollows at T.T. The Bear’s Place, Cambridge MA, Oct. 18, 2009

Sarah Negahdari, Chris Hernandez, and Charles Mahoney of The Happy Hollows

Toward the end of my ‘Silverlake East Coast Revue’, there was this marvelous miracle of an appearance by highly regarded (and rightly justified!) eastside L.A. band, The Happy Hollows, at our lovely little dive, T.T. The Bear’s Place in Central Square. I don’t know how on earth they got plunked onto a bill that sandwiched them between two swampy Southern rock bands, but bless all the pagan gods that they did. [as Sarah said to me afterward, “we were the odd ducks in the middle”. Odd and immensely talented ducks, I’d say!]

The big and exciting news of this show is the first Boston appearance of The Happy Hollows. Having just been proclaimed by Radio Free Silver Lake as “the best band playing regularly in Los Angeles right now”, they’ve just released their debut album Spells, and will be performing a few shows here on the East Coast along with an appearance at CMJ.

This is an addendum to my recent Silverlake Band Update. Yes, I do realize that most of these upcoming events are in California and this is a Boston blog. I figured I would get everyone really, really familiar with all these names so you’ll know who I’m talking about when they do come here. Meanwhile, perhaps it’ll serve as some kind of invocation.
