On this morning’s Expanding Awareness, Victor will be joined once again by Byron Jordan. Byron’s been on Victor’s show many times through the years, and is extremely knowledgeable about what he refers to as “Earth Medicine” – natural ways of re-balancing the body for maximum health and well-being. His training includes: biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, herbalism, homeopathy, and Native American medicine.

Failing to include them in ‘Boston Bands This Week,’ I’ll instead give Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling their own mention, as they’ll be embarking on their first ever tour after a show at PA’s Lounge in Somerville TONIGHT.

There’s so much great music to check out this week, I can only touch on some of it. See listings on the sidebar for more, and please let me know if I’m missing something interesting (I frequently do). We’ve got two FREE daytime concert series in four different locations, presented by arts organizations around Cambridge. Somerville has their annual Art Beat happening Friday and Saturday in Davis Square. And there’s interesting shows (and a few new album releases) coming up with Laura Jorgensen and Nature In The City; Rob Potylo and HUMANWINE; and Sarah RabDAU and Goli.

Don’t think of this as a review. Think of it as a commemoration of an unusual event. A last minute change of plans (thanks to my friend Elizabeth, a benefactor of the arts in the truest sense) found me packed in alongside sweaty drunken college students on Lansdowne Street, at WFNX’s Clambake. Which was something of a misnomer, as no one but the giant lobster knew where the heck the clams were, but with an amazing lineup of bands (especially during the outdoor portion), all is forgiven.

The Happy Hollows in serious action at O'Brien's Pub.
It seems unbelievable that one can still see The Happy Hollows in a tiny, low-key establishment like O’Brien’s Pub. Why the hell isn’t this amazing band stupidly huge by now??
share this:Yes, I’m afraid it has come to this. Mea culpa. First there’s “Agent Bishop Presents: Girls in the Summer (Beach Party)” at Church of Boston, featuring St. Helena, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Aloud, and Naked on Rollerskates. All Boston – or at least New England – based bands. Or (bummer it’s the same night, but maybe you can somehow catch a bit of both) – Deli New England is having their third free showcase at the House of Blues front room, part of an ongoing new series of local music hosted by this wonderful blog. Tonight they welcome Vostok 4, Ghost Quartet, and Those Wolves Actually Happened. Keep reading for a look at the bands.
share this:It was a wondrous and hilarious clashing of cultures in the House of Blues restaurant on Lansdowne Street after Evelyn Evelyn’s tour finale in the big room. Jaggery brought a huge helping of class to this section of town best known for baseball, burgers and beer. And Walter Sickert and The Army of Broken Toys, with a wicked gleam in their eyes, tried to see just how far they could go before having the plug pulled. Pretty damn far, I’m happy to report. Jaggery harpist extraordinaire Petaluma Vale commented after their classical and gothic-inspired ethereal set, “I think I’m overdressed for this place,” as she glanced down at her elegant long skirt, appearing for all the world like a fairy princess lost in Walmart. I argued that the Lansdowne Street eatery was lucky to have such a classy event grace their establishment.

Jeff Conley at the Hard Rock Cafe tonight; Mary Bichner at Club Passim Sunday.
Three nice shows to help everyone officially kick off their summer. First up, there’s the Narragansett Summer Concert Series TONIGHT at the Hard Rock Cafe, with an evening of rootsy Americana featuring Jimmy Ryan and Hayride, Sam Reid & the Riot Act and others. Then tomorrow, an actual “Summer Kick-off Party” at T.T. the Bear’s Place, featuring Plushgun, The Appreciation Post, Vivian Darkbloom, and Mr. Fyner & the Tech Ed Room. And straight off their East Coast tour and epic evening at the House of Blues Evelyn Evelyn afterparty (review forthcoming), Jaggery will be performing on Sunday with Mary Bichner/Box Five and Ginger Ibex at the venerable folk establishment, Club Passim.

Angela Correa and Tom Brosseau of Les Shelleys
Sometimes it’s nice to ditch the loud rock club in favor of something a bit more low-key and relaxed, and spend an evening focusing on the songs and heartfelt singing accompanied very simply by acoustic guitar. Such was the case Thursday night at the legendary and venerable Club Passim, in the company of Portland, Oregon singer-songwriter Shelley Short and from L.A., aficionados of American songwriting – both traditional and modern, Les Shelleys.
